look what we brought home
 

My daughter has always known she was getting a project truck for her first vehicle. She had it narrowed down to a mid fifties or 60's model truck. A friend of mine knew about this truck and has been trying to get me to go look at it for a couple of years, but I wasn't ready for a project yet. Now that my daughter is 14 1/2 I figured its time to start the project. Had to tow it home, the carb wasn't getting any gas. Rebuilt the rochester and got it running good enough to park it in the driveway. Now I just need to find somebody who can adjust the carb for me.

I read somewhere about using CLR to scrub the rust off, so off to dollar general to give her something to do with her afternoon.

Congrats on the project.

My daughter has helped me with the planning and direction of my project, but she doesn't do anything but sit in it and make motor noises. :lol:

as far as specs I really don't know. It has a V8 small block with an HEI distributor which leads me to believe newer engine. I need to find the engine code and fine out what I have. 3spd manual on the tree. This was done on purpose. I don't think there will be any boy in high school who will know how to drive a 3 on the tree. The wife and I also wanted the most steel we could get around our girl. I know from past experiences these old trucks can take quite an impact and still drive home.

She should have it cleaned up by the weekend and I will post before and after pics. She is using 0000 steel wool and a 50/50 mixture of CLR and water in a spray bottle. After a while with the steel wool she decided to load some 400 grit on the palm sander and just wet sand with the CLR. Seems to work pretty well.

that's awesome...welcome aboard...seen it before, but it looks like the CLR is working great!...i'd leave that natural patina once she's done cleaning...can't wait to see more pics...ya'll have fun with it :)

Nice!!! My daughters are always wanting to help me out when work on my Burb. So whenever it's safe I let them watch for now. My girlfriend and I hoping that by the time they are old enough to drive they will each have their own hot rod that they fixed up. My youngest already has said she wants my baja bug and my oldest wants a suburban. I can't wait for the summer to get here so we all can get our hands dirty.

Welcome to the boards. Nice to see that there are still kids today who have taste. That's a nice patina by the way. You and your daughter are gonna have some great memories fixing up the truck together.

What a wonderful thing.
Your daughter has genuine 'taste' in vehicles. Props to you and your wife on making sure she has the right rig....and it's a real beauty.
My two younger daughters (24 & 25 yrs old now) spent their early driving years together in mid sixties & early '70's vehicles....
Honest to god, to this day, one of their favorite aromas is "essence of exhaust" (the trunk of the '71 Duster had a perforated floor from the rust).
The 26 year old has settled for a '63 Dart GT.....great car, but she's also got her eye on my projects.
Your daughters C-10 sure does seem to be very complete and all original.
Absolutely a fabulous find.
How 'bout the interior....?

I think everything but the engine is original including the AM radio in the floor board. I'll get pics of the interior this afternoon. Thinking about just shooting rattle can clear coat on the patina for now until she is ready for paint.

Thats a good idea. i love the patina look. i would just paint the wheels and caps and make sure the engine is on time and run it like that for a while...maybe some white walls also. your duaghter's got character and she's definately gonna get some attention...good luck with that.

Looks like she wants it restored almost original. she wants it baby blue under a cream top. So far her only other requests are a new radio and bucket seats with a console.
I plan on upgrading to power brakes although I might leave them drum and power steering after driving into the driveway. It's been years since I drove a non power truck. Would like to upgrade to disc brakes at least on the front. When the wife found out the tank is literally behind the seat her request/demand was to fix that. Looks like a tank relocation.

It seems to be in really good shape for a 45 year old truck at least mechanically.

There are some good vendors on here that can help you with all that! You might also look at a wiring harness if yours has been spliced into as much as mine has when I got it! Good luck!

Also, you made me :lol: when I read about the three on the tree and how the boys won't know how to drive it! :D Kids these days!
