Steering way to loose
My steering has way to much play in it, and all the steering parts are brand new and all the nuts and bolts are tight. What do I need to do to tighten it up? Also the truck is 4 wheel drive will be waiting to hear how to fix this
Thanks |
Re: Steering way to loose
define loose.. compared to the newer trucks the steering on these trucks is sloppy and loose.. its just normal for most of the trucks of this genre tho

The wheel has about 1/4 play in it and thats not right cuz i also have a 80 c20 it does not have that much in it of play in it, i know there is play in these trucks but not this much |
Re: Steering way to loose
There's a stud sticking up on top of the steering box cover plate with a lock nut on it, Loosen the nut and turn the stud with a allen wrench inward 1/4 turn at a time until most of the slop is gone. Keep your hands off/away from the steering wheel when you start the engine after adjusting, If you go too far in with the adjuster the wheel could snatch around as the engine fires and take a finger/thumb out.

Re: Steering way to loose
Be careful adjusting it that way and test by turning lock to lock after each adjustment. You may find the slop is gone, but it binds when turning.

Re: Steering way to loose
Here is a thread where guys replaced the rag joint with Jeep XJ steering shaft. Never did it but they said they had great results...
