Astro steering shaft floor placement
I am in the process of installing a steering column out of an astro van into my 59, but I am having trouble determining where the shaft should go through the floor.
Does anyone have any pictures showing this? Thanks. |
Re: Astro steering shaft floor placement
Has anyone else had to cut a hole into the firewall above the original steering shaft hole? I'll try to post a pic in afew days.
Thanks |
Re: Astro steering shaft floor placement
It just takes the right size hole saw to cut the hole along with getting it in the right place so that the wheel is in a comfortable position for you to drive with. Secondly it needs to clear the engine and exhaust and have a fairly clear path to the steering box with the least possibilities of binding up due to tight bends in U joints.

Re: Astro steering shaft floor placement
I don't have any pics to share but, I prefer the column to be higher onto the firewall. A lower mounted column looks a little better in the engine bay but, a higher floor mount looks MUCH better in the cab. 99.9% of the time the hood is closed anyway. On my 54 the column is actually just above the foot/angled area. The column comes through at the lower portion of the flat part of the firewall.
