1985 ecm ???
I have got a 1985 gmc with a 454 and a 4 speed. What ecm system does it have on it. All I found was a little silver box on the driver side valve cover. What does all this do and can I just disconect and chunk the wires. I really dont think none of it is working anyways? Can anyone show me some pics of what it is supposed to look like. It has the stock quadra jet with the temp controlled choke sytem...

Re: 1985 ecm ???
IIRC there is only an Electronic Spark Controller on that model IF it even has one, I didnt think the larger trucks had them.
I would go talk to someone like DPS officer who is in charge of Vehichle inspections to verify your truck is exempt on emissions. Dont rip anything out till you know for sure. |
Re: 1985 ecm ???
I live in a small rural community we don't even do emission test here.

Re: 1985 ecm ???
Unless it was originally a California truck, it shouldn't have an ECM. It should have come from the factory with an AIR system, PCV valve, and EGR system, but no ECM.
As for the little silver box, I have a relay that attaches to the drivers side valve cover (mine's more white than silver). I don't know what it is for, I haven't ever traced the wires. I just left it on. Technically you're not supposed to remove any of the emissions equipment that came with the truck. Even though out here in the country we don't have to pass an emissions test, the annual safety inspection is supposed to include a visual check of all emissions components. Of course, they may not notice the absence of a component . . . but I'm not advocating that nor have I attempted it. |
Re: 1985 ecm ???
