My ultra-low-budget rough-rod...

Hey guys, been working on this old farm truck for a few months. Got it for $150 and a .22 rifle, hopped in, and drove it home. Ran back and forth to work and back for awhile with the 250 6 banger while searching for a V8 to swap. Did some trading and landed a 454 with only 55K original miles on it, swapped it in with the 6 cyl mounts. The exaust was a crazy idea I decided to run with, sounds great and(believe it or not) don't fumagate the cab like it would seem. Lowered it about 3" front and 6.5" rear. I want to go much lower eventually. Total invested so far is a tick over $1K(that includes values of things I traded for some of the parts)

Hope you guys like...

-John

interesting on the exhaust...
if you punched a hole in the inner fender, you could run it behind the fender and then get a 60's style dump ...

cool truck! From the time you pull out of the driveway - how many minutes before you get a ticket?

I dig it! Are you gonna cut out the back corners of the hood and put it back on?

I think it would be cool to continue the exhaust down the fender and into a pair of side pipes.

Thanks guys. I thought of running it inside the fender but thought hell, I'm THIS far, I may as well go all the way "unique" lol. I like the side pipe idea though, might try that if the fuzz get antsy about this setup. The hood is going back on, just got excited that it was driveable again and didn't take the time to notch it out yet lol.

Haven't been stopped yet, still trying to get the little "stop me please" stuff taken care of. Put a mirror on it last night, gotta get a plate light and get my driver side tail/brake light working...but that exaust...not sure yet hahahaha

Welcome from Grants Pass!
Truck looks cool.
I've got a couple GMC parts hoods if you were interested in one to cut up so you wouldn't have to ruin your good hood if you wanted to keep your exhaust like that and run a hood.

Thanks guys. My hood is as beat as the rest lol. The plan is to do brake and suspension work before thinking about body. Gonna swap on discs and rear end from a '75, get the front down another couple inches, do a flip and notch on the rear to get it dragging ass lol. I kinda like the patina/ranch truck look...

neat project, that exhaust is one way to go :lol: Definitely different!

my buddy robert did something similar, ran his 283 exhaust out each front fender.

I saw your truck too, was pointing it out to my wife and saying "Mine will never be THAT nice..." lol That is one clean ride! Theres a few 60-66's out but they don't seem as plentiful as the '59 and older stuff. I was diggin' the blue shortbed with the tail almost dragging the pavement lol

Small town for sure lol

man i need to get out more i dont see anybodys truck around oregon, and im suprised with how many there of us there are, how loud are your pipes there?

JohnnyBoy350 07-09-2011 12:09 AM

Re: My ultra-low-budget rough-rod...

Not as loud as you'd think, till you get on it lol But quiet enough to get around without attracting cops. Haha I won "Best Rat Rod" at a show today...probly cause of the wierd exaust.

Oh, as a side note, I checked my mileage on the poker run out in Glide today, was going 50-60 mph 99% of the time and got 12.2 mpg. Not bad for a 454 I don't think lol
