vinegar for manifold rust removal?
I'm not sure where this is suppose to go so id figure just ask here. I have some rusty manifolds and am thinking of using vinegar to clean them and wondering if the vinegar would weaken them? What do you guys use? Any help would be great:).

Naval jelly. $6/btl at Lowes and Home Depot in the paint department. Been used for decades.

I don't believe so, but here's a link to another thread that discusses this:

Re: vinegar for manifold rust removal?
I'm not sure how you could be doin it wrong. But get off the excess rust and smather the part in jelly. You can use anything from a q tip to a paint brush. A bottle goes pretty far. If its bad enough just let it dry then apply more to reactivate it. Rinse it off when you are done. You will not have a shiny surface but you will have a dark surface as most rust coverters prove. Vinegar is good but you have to use electrolosis. You have to isolate the part in a non ferous container and eletrify it. If you get a five gallon bucket of vinegar from Sam' Club, a plastic pail and a battery charger you don't mind burning up vinegar works great.

Thanks for the correction...only heard of it done electrified. Maybe I'll price out a bucket of vinegar and see how well it works when I get some of these rusty parts off my truck. Sounds green to me!

Re: vinegar for manifold rust removal?
I use vinegar to clean tools. Never used electrolysis with vinegar. It can take a while if there is a fair amount of rust, the last pair of needle nose pliers I did I left in the cup of vinegar for nearly a week. Doesn't bother me that it takes a while, I throw them in the cup and forget about them.
