1968 Dodge Dart

Some of you may know, I sold my '69 C10 and bought a 1968 Dodge Dart 270 this past Saturday. I would've gotten this posted up earlier, but, hey, my internet was down :sumo:. Here's what we got: 225 Slant 6 (Offy intake, Holley 390), Torqueflite 904, only 86k original miles. Here's pics, I know y'all love them! ;)

All in all, the car is in fantastic shape. The seats are a little worn, but not too bad. Heck, even the original dash pad is uncracked! So this is not at all a project car, but a daily driver to have some fun with.

My plans for it currently are this:
-Drive it! ;)
-Get front end aligned and 4 new tires
-Thicker diameter torsion bars to level out handling
-F/R swaybars (depending on how the car reacts to the new torsion bars)
-Drive it! ;)

Anyways, here 'tis! I'll post more pics when I get a chance to take some decent ones.

That Dart is awesome, 4 doors are stealthy too! any plans for it or just leave it as it is and cruise it?

Re: 1968 Dodge Dart

For the most part, I'm just looking at improving the handling of it, it's a little washy for my taste. If I feel up to it, I'm considering putting a dual-carb progressive setup on, maybe a lumpier cam, who knows?

I'm a dart nut also. I've been working on a 1968 dart 270 for 4 years now. Mine is a two door with a 505 stroker and tko 600 five speed. now I have a 68 c10 also and I used to have a 68 olds 442 i'm starting to notice a trend.

A 505 in a Dart? Uh, dayum!

Re: 1968 Dodge Dart

A bit bigger than my slant...

Not much progress on it lately, I'm getting new tires and front end alignment this week. Hopefully next week or the week after I can head up to the local junkyard and do a little scavenging for some interior trim parts.

And, gosh, I gotta take Lucy on a photo shoot sometime! Those pics need some help! ;)

Years ago I built a 70 dart with a mild 318 that I put holley efi on.I threw the mopar performance suspension catalog at it.Sway bars front and rear ,torsion bars, and dearched rear springs, bilsteins,Poly bushings every where. That thing handled like it was on rails. Also had cop car wheels,15x7?Very fun to drive.HAve fun with it!

Re: 1968 Dodge Dart

What color interior does yours have? Mine is gold and I still haven't found someone that makes a repro gold vinyl upholstery for it. :(

Re: 1968 Dodge Dart

Mine is medium green, with cloth seats. I don't know if you've looked at Year One, they seem to have some good products.

...and since I finally got tires on 'er, time for another pic:

I had it aligned at the same time, and boy was that needed! It lifted the front end up by about 2 inches! Hopefully I'll get time for a real shoot sometime soon. We'll see.

Re: 1968 Dodge Dart

I've tread every supplier i could find I guess the gold is pretty rare. You've got to love 68 is the only year that had that padded lower dash and I really like the little side marker lights.

Re: 1968 Dodge Dart

Hmmm...have you thought about getting a custom re-up? They would certainly be able to get the color you want.

...and I had no idea 205 70 14 tires would be so hard to get! I had hoped to get radial T/As, but no dice--they just stopped producing them. Same for a set of Coopers the tire shop had lined me up for a week in advance. I finally got a set of Sumic GT-A's...don't really know anything about them, we'll see how they work.

You can see from my sig who the Mopar guy on this site is...

That is the perfect car to make into a sleeper. Have you thought about a 390 or 408 stroker?

cam.man67 08-19-2011 12:13 PM

Re: 1968 Dodge Dart

Yes, I can see that...;)

To be honest, I'm going to stick with the slant 6 for right now. I've always been enamored with them for their simplicity and durability, I'd kinda like to keep that. Maybe not the most powerful engine in the world, but I'm happy with it. :)

Re: 1968 Dodge Dart

could always add a turbo to it ;)

cam.man67 08-19-2011 06:54 PM

Re: 1968 Dodge Dart

It's a thought...stock motor, hook up a small turbo...it would be pretty simple...

I've also been toying around with some NA performance setups, maybe dual carb, Clifford cam...who knows?

85Bowtie 08-20-2011 12:45 AM

Re: 1968 Dodge Dart

That's cool...if you turbo the 225 though they don't like to be reved much beyond 4500 RPM or so because they are severly under-square.

Year One is pretty much a ripoff on most things they sell, if not everything. If interior parts are what you're after try B/E & A, R/T specialties, Dante's, Valley Parts etc. or browse on Moparts.com and join the forum if you like. As far as interior panels, I've had excellent service with Legendary Auto Interiors and the prices are reasonable.

My next project I'm going to do something different....I'm thinking of picking up a clean K-car (Aries/Reliant) and doing an SRT-4 swap with ~350 rwhp. That should catch some people off guard.

Re: 1968 Dodge Dart

Yeah, I've heard that. It's a street driver, so I'm not that worried about revving it too high.

I'll have to check those distributors out, right now I'm in interior parts mode, looking for front armrests and a radio trim plate (gosh, how hard is it to find those things? ;) )

Re: 1968 Dodge Dart

No major updates, just an "it's a small world" moment with the Dart here: it turns out my girfriend's neighbor is a Dart junkie, and he just recently sold a '65 convertible. Well, when he found out I had a '68 (same year his wife used have, I think) he gave me two boxes full of parts, a set of mounted snow tires, three factory slant 6 air cleaners, plus an intake, 2bbl carb, and exhaust manifold--all for free!

I'm in the process of restoring one of the air cleaners to replace my chrome Summit setup, though I think I'll have to use the Summit base cuz I'm running 4bbl instead of 2. Pics to to come.
