Spray on Chrome
 

I caught the tail end of My Classic Car today. Leno was on talking about a low cost alternative to chrome plating called Spray on Chrome. I wasn't able to get much info on the product from the show but did some research and came up with this. Anyone else heard of it?

That's the first time I saw the process actually demonstrated and it does have possibilities. I don't know if a guy would want to do a bumper or grill with it but as they said in the video it should work good for the chrome plastic trim pieces inside the car and a guy might save a diecast piece that otherwise couldn't be saved.

That's amazing. I wonder how readily available that is to the regular guy like you and I? And of course, what is the cost for the materials, guns, etc?

I saw something similar on an episode of West Coast Customs where they built an Audi A8 for the movie tron. They finished the whole body in Chrome.

I think you'd find it's quite pricey to start out... but depending on how much you intend to chrome, the overall costs would tend to dwindle. Those spray guns don't look cheap and any product like that will come with a decent price tag since it's a DIY job.

I don't see what the problem with bumpers would be you would just have to treat them as painted, this would have awesome possibilities for doing two tone with a chrome and paint combo or doing something like the ss stripes on a car in chrome haha.

I found another option called Killer Cans. This one looks even simpler.

The process is costly material wise but works well on different materials not just plastics. just like with any paint process its all in the prep. This process requires skilled painters to perform application and requires at least 2 painters at one time to apply the wet on wet activator. Its is cool to see it go on. Before the last quick application is applied it looks like a hot mess. Then in a blink it is chrome. Gotta love chemistry!
