I'm Stumped!!

i was driving my 72 around looking at houses. It was aroung 105 out and now i know not to drive when its that hot. I have a 454 bbc in it. Got home fine. But when i went to start it again to put it back it the garage it wouldn't start. just cranking like a mother. Figured vapor lock right? Wrong! it cooled down and still no start. Took two plugs out which look okay to me and touched them to bolts and no spark. I have hei so i figured the modual is fried. changed it and the rotor. Still no spark. Its just cranking?!!!!! I'm rather frustrated. please shed some light. I have new summit racing 90 degree wires. Surely all the plugs didn't go bad. I just don't know.

Re: I'm Stumped!!

There should be 12 volts to the distributor with the ignition on. Measure the voltage at the terminal on the distributor cap marked "ignition". There should not be a fuse in the wiring circuit for the ignition wire leading to the distributor. If you have power then check the reluctor coil with an ohm meter. It should read approximately 750 ohms. I f no reading or open, then it should be replaced.

Is the rotor turning? May have sheared the distributor gear or something. If not, are the rockers moving?

Re: I'm Stumped!!

I had the same thing happen while I was driving a few weeks ago at night. At first I thought I was out of gas. Went and put 5 gallons of fuel in and would just turn over. I ended up having my wife pull my truck home....The next day I pulled the fuel line and checked to see if my fuel pump was working....it did.....I then pulled the main wire to the HEI from the ignition. at first I didn't have anything and then for some reason it was giving me the full 12v....I reinstalled the wire and it started.....no problems since.
