Another newbie question....what is this?
 

So, um, I don't know what this is. Next to the radiator on the driver's side is this cylinder with a few vacuum lines going to the carb. It's a 79 Chyenne with a GM Crate 350. My first thought was A/C, but I see no mention of it elsewhere. Trying to get rid of some stuff under the hood that I don't need...maybe this is one of them? Forgive the dumb question. Thanks.

Its a charcoal canister for fuel fumes.

Some dude axed that not too long ago...its a a charcoal canister...it sucks up gas fumes so your car doesn't stink.

I would think that you will be fine.... Just an emissions part from the 70's and 80's that really doesn't make a difference.

Isn't it part of your smog system as well? I have to get rid of mine, I already took off the other parts that came with it.

carbon can. you really don't need it, it's mostly for show. just re-route the lines and it's fine.

That little black canister is the Charcoal Canister...as was mentioned. It is extra baggage if your state does not require it for smog. In California it IS required. If your state is eminently considering Draconian type laws requiring stricter emission controls, consider keeping it. Shine it up and maybe it will look pretty:)

It's supposed to contain gas vapors from your fuel tank. However, I'd be really surprised if a vapor retention device from 1979 would still be able to retain vapors. :) Remove it, it won't make any difference in how it runs..but you might want to stash it so if your state goes full greenie and starts requiring OE emission controls on 30 year old vehicles you can hollow it out and put it back on for show.

People were ok without it for the previous 70 or 80 years of motor vehicle use....

Mine wasn't connected when I bought the truck, and every time I shut the engine off it off the garage stunk with gas fumes for an hour or more. I put in a new filter pad and connected all the hoses. That took care of the stink. The cannister won't interfere with performance one way or the other.

I pulled mine out shortly after getting my truck and I never noticed a difference one way or another. Basically if it bothers you or you want to clean up your engine bay...pull it. If not leave it.

Nice truck!!! Is that paint color Bright Poly Blue, or Medium Blue? Do you have the paint code... Sorry this is off topic, but there aren't too many blue squares on here.

I'm glad you brought it up, 'cause I'm having a bit of a hard time finding it. The truck was repainted, but from a few dings I can see that they matched the original finish. According to the '79 GM truck color chart @ autocolorlibrary, it's code 25 'brt. blue poly.' I just need a little bit for rust repair (rattlecan?), but I haven't seen '25' anywhere. I'm sure the color was used under different names and codes throught the years, but I'm not sure. It is a nice color, though. Any tips would be appreciated!

I`m getting ready to desmog mine...yes I live in california, yes I know smog lows are horrible here. Not if you have a "guy" hehehe. Yank all unneccessary crap out. It`ll look soooooo much cleaner.

no ones gonna say it? ok I will.....plug the lines if u remove it, not plugging them off will suck dirt and cause bad things, seriously ive removed all of them off every vehicle, but this method works, and this carb likes the suck from the can so it stays....its ur call just remember, worked fine for 35 years.....

maybe someone can clarify for me, where can i cut and plug the line coming from the fuel tank? (preferably before it gets to the underhood area)

Thanks for all the replies. I will certainly plug the carb. The only thing I'm a bit worried about is keeping the ventilation for the gas tank. As I understand it, these canisters act as a vent for the tank and without a vented gas cap or other vent along the fuel line, there could be some issues. Could anyone elaborate on this? Thanks again!

If you plug the line from the fuel tank, the tank won't vent and the engine will starve for fuel due to vacuum building up. Just put new lines and a new filter in the cannister. It's there for several reasons, none of which will affect performance.
