patina?
 

How do I patina my truck paint job is total crap, (cracks, peels just plain ugly) patina looks smooth and mine is like nowhere close. Po didn't prime just sprayed over orig. paint. This caused a reaction close to chemical paint remover. Any advice, thanks.

Patina? Like the look of an old gun barrel?

If it's as bad as you say (reaction like paint remover) I think you have to start all over again and repaint...

Hahaha wow. Do people actually do this?

Maybe I'll go age my truck by whipping it with a length of chain. Or should I just spray some acid on to help the rust come along.

This is actually a common way of changing the way a car looks, it's very common on older cars with fading and generally sad condition paint, I don't see the point of being sarcastic and possibly discouraging another member from trying a creative way to make his truck unique.

To be fair, the methods I mentioned are accepted ways of aging furniture. And if, as you say, this is a common method for painting vehicles it's not exactly going to make his truck 'unique'.

Semantics aside though I do agree that discouraging a person to do what they'd like is in bad taste. If everyone conformed we'd all be driving the same beige Toyota Carolla. I'm just not sure what he means by getting a patina on his truck. To me that means the oxidization on old pennies and guns. A lot of people would like to avoid that on their car.

I was considering doing the same thing.....what I think he is trying to accomplish is the "Texas Fade" as I like to call it. The sun faded, old school, hot rod shop truck/bonneville salt flat look. It is fairly common, but to me still cool. I like the idea of low maintenance paint jobs and not having to worry about every little nook and cranny being perfect on a daily driven rig. JMO...

Ah ha! The google images did indeed let me in on the secret. A sort of paint blending to primer look that's downright impossible to achieve in my part of Canada (our trucks just rust through after a couple years).

Sorry but I can't help you. Cracked and peeling paint would mean sanding and repainting to me. Of course if you let it sit long enough eventually all that paint would come off and you'd have some sort of patina again...

Edit: sorry for insulting beige corollas... I meant that CLEARLY they're the best car in the world and everyone should drive one

OBVIOUSLY!!! but yeah that style is better suited to dry salt free environments

Haha, its real big in the VW tuner scene, people purposely rust their hoods with that combo.
