recommend Gears ratio
Got a 56 3200,
350 engine 400 tranny Normal day to day driving. currently has the stock gears. what gear ration do you recommend? and where can I get some replacement gears? are the 80's model trucks rear ends close to the same width? Thanks |
Re: recommend Gears ratio
I have 3.08 gears and they are alright, still would like something better for the highway.
How do plan to use your truck? Is racing important, much highway driving? |
Re: recommend Gears ratio
I'm running a second gen camaro rear that has 2.73 gears.
350/350 combo and gets around 15 mpg. I used it as a daily driver and to tow a medium sizde trailer every now and then. |
Re: recommend Gears ratio
I have tried them all and my favorite is a 3:55, unless you want to get there quicker but run out of breath faster use a 4:11 !!

Re: recommend Gears ratio
Your gear selection is going to depend on your tire size and how much you want your RPM's to be. You can go online and find a gear/tire/speed calculator that you can play with. You can imput tire size and gear ratios and it will tell you the RPM's at different speeds. If you cruise the freeways 3.70 is probably a good bet. If you travel surface streets mostly then try some 4.11s. I have a Pro Street truck with a 400 trans and 4.56 gears with 31 inch tall tires that stays on the surface streets. Try that calculator and see what you like.

Re: recommend Gears ratio
You cerently have 3.90 ratio. You can buy replacement gears in a 3.38 ratio. I understand they use 80's 4X4 rear ends to keep the 6 bolt bolt patern. A good way to go would be a 700R4 o-drive trans.

Re: recommend Gears ratio
If your normal driving includes any highway speeds, you want 3.00 or steeper. Even with a tall tire, 3.55 may be too low for you.
