Oops, CL buy gone bad

I picked up a 454 a while back and obviously, I'm too trusting. The guy said it was a fresh engine and ran great. I didn't pay much for it since it was already pulled and couldn't hear it run. I did pull all the tin and everything looked good and clean. There were no shavings, water in the oil, etc...so I put it all back together. I fired it up this week and it started clanking up top right away. Oil pressure was good, but it got louder very quickly and then all hell broke loose. The pic below is pretty much all that's left of the #1 cyl. There is one smaller piece down by the crank. Looks like it's time to stroke it and go all forged internals as long as the block checks out and the cyl can be cleaned up. I don't have a question, just thought I would share and remind you, buyer beware. Oh well, it's only money and time, right?

Oh man...that is NOT healthy at all. Hopefully you can build a hardcore engine with the block if its all good.

Bet ya something got dropped in the intake when they pulled it or when it was sitting around

Sure look like that to me or a seized ring or two. Put a fresh set of pistons, one rod and full set of bearings in, balance it and go.

It's going to take another .060+/- to clean that cylinder up. The wrist pin got into the wall pretty good. I rane a bore gauge in it and I think a .060 plus hone will be ok. That will put it at .090 over and leave room for at least one more rebuild in the future. If I rebuild, I'll go forged crank, rods and pistons as well as an o-ringed block. My goal is to have a low 5 sec 1/8 mile street driven truck and running 275-300 shot of juice.

On another note, I've been a member here for 11 years and this post is #1000. Haha

You can have the cylinder sleeved

I am considering having it sleeved. I'll drop it off at my engine shop and get his opinion. I will be looking at a 275-300 shot of juice down the road and I don't know how well a sleeve will hold up to it.

Wow that sucks looks like it got hammered pretty bad! I was wandering the same thing if they dropped something into it when they had it opened up. Good luck with the motor build
