zack231's 4x4 CCSB, Project "Learning Experience"
4 Attachment(s)
I just picked up this beast.
It has a 6.2L diesel, 700R4, rear SF 14 bolt, front 8 lug 10 bolt, and I'm not sure on the T-case. The front floors are pretty solid, the rockers, wheel wells, and rear tail gate are super rusty. Attachment 783742 I met a guy up here that bought a similar burb to use the rear diff and trans T-case. It has a nice gate and many other parts that I need, so hopefully i'll be getting some of that stuff in the near future. I'm also planning on running some 33-36" tires on it and upgrading the running gear as needed, i.e. after breakage ;) When I got it the glow plugs didn't work, the batteries were dead and the drag link was about to fall apart. I replaced the drag link, got the glow plugs working, and swapped batteries. Now it starts right up whether it is hot or cold. The boys and i took it out for some light wheeling and fishing yesterday, it did great! Attachment 783744 Attachment 783745 Attachment 783746 it is still idling rough and some white/blue smoke at idle, but runs great off idle. I have been doing lots of 6.2L research since this is my first and have figured out a couple things to check out. I'm going to check my IP timing and the injectors(I'm hoping it isn't a compression problem). I'm about to head out and check them now. Any of the 6.2 guys out there, feel free to give me your input. |
Re: 1984 K20 6.2L suburban, project "Smokey the 'Burb"
well I got it running much better. I advanced the IP timing a smidge, and found a loose injector line connection at the IP. I also fixed a major exhaust leak. Turns out about everything the PO touched is loose or has the wrong bolts in it :banghead: I guess it is a blessing in disguise, if it weren't for bad mechanic-ing i wouldn't have gotten it so cheap. I also got the passenger wing window replaced, that was pretty funny, the PO used 2 pieces of thin wood paneling and sandwiched the window frame with them then used finish brads to hold it together. Bent the brads over and duct taped over it all
It is much quieter and smoother now  I think it's time to go fishing again..... |

Re: 1984 K20 6.2L suburban, project "Smokey the 'Burb"
Thanks Adam!
The oldest boy caught a silver salmon yesterday. We are back out now with no luck so far. http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/y...1/bd7b9c32.jpg http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/y...1/aeb3d3c0.jpg |
Re: 1984 K20 6.2L suburban, project "Smokey the 'Burb"
I picked up some 35's tonight.
http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/y...1/f0e4e45d.jpg and met a forum member who is restoring a 1980 short bed 4x4, his name is KC. I can't find him on here though, maybe he will pop in and say hi :) I need some 8 lug 15" wheels now, KC is gonna look and see if he has some. He tried to buy my crew, he had seen it on here. Small world  Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: 1984 K20 6.2L suburban, project "Smokey the 'Burb"
Well....
I guess no one is interested in my old crusty Burb, eh? I'll keep posting anyway :ito::lol: I picked up some crusty spoke wheels. Wire wheeled them and painted them with rustoleum hammered finish. I love that stuff, it covers up any imperfections and rust pitting. I mounted up the 35's http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/y...1/a857ba3b.jpg My oldest son, Zack, cut out the fenders to clear the tires. I used the same black hammered finish paint on the wheel wells. I didn't have any masking tape so I just free handed it  http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/y...1/f436506d.jpg http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/y...1/594d7b4b.jpg The pics are kinda shaded, I'll take some better ones in the sun soon ;) Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 1984 K20 6.2L suburban, project "Smokey the 'Burb"
Thanks!
Night and day huh? I think I might buy a gallon of satin black rustoleum and give it a cheap roller job :) Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 1984 K20 6.2L suburban, project "Smokey the 'Burb"
Sweet truck, its very "alaskan" I was up there a couple weeks ago I love the style of the trucks up there - very utilitarian.

Re: 1984 K20 6.2L suburban, project "Smokey the 'Burb"
Thanks man!
This truck is definitely a beater, and super fun! What were you doing up this way? Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: 1984 K20 6.2L suburban, project "Smokey the 'Burb"
We went on a lame cruise, but did get to go fishing in Juneau and do a little hiking.
I vote for painting the whole thing black. |
Re: 1984 K20 6.2L suburban, project "Smokey the 'Burb"
Oh cool
Juneau is a cool place!! I'm pretty sure I'm gonna black it out... Posted via Mobile Device |

Love the burb'! I wish my wife would let me get one. I'd love a 4x4 diesel burb' for camping! She thinks they are ugly though, yet she likes my truck... :uhmk: |
Re: 1984 K20 6.2L suburban, project "Smokey the 'Burb"
Looks good Joe! Im glad you bought a 4x4 instead of making your crew one lol
|
Re: 1984 K20 6.2L suburban, project "Smokey the 'Burb"
Way too cool, the new shoes made all the difference.

yep its going on here, the current intake has one ear broke off of it. I may repair it after I replace it Quote:
 my wife thinks most of what I drag up is ugly, but she just lacks my "vision" ;) Quote:
it ain't over yet, the driving force behind me looking for a cheap burb was for the 4x4 crew conversion....but this one is too much fun to rip apart  I think the crew would be cool as a 4x4 with a 6.2 diesel...... Quote:
it did make a huge difference, even the wife likes it better now  |
Re: 1984 K20 6.2L suburban, project "Smokey the 'Burb"
thats a good lookin burb. id like to have one myself. my wife seems to lack my "vision" as well

Re: 1984 K20 6.2L suburban, project "Smokey the 'Burb"
buy big tires.....remove annoying sheetmetal......I like it

Re: 1984 K20 6.2L suburban, project "Smokey the 'Burb"
Me too, I got rid of a bunch rust in the process :metal: I need to add an easy inch (zero rate) to the front to raise it up a smidge. It is certainly fun to take out wheeling, doesn't matter if it gets trail rash or dents. It just adds character ;) I still want to "murder it out" Posted via Mobile Device |
