what auto od should i use?
building my 68 swb 3/4 4x4. engine will be a multi-port efi 396, running 4 inches of lift, 36x12.5 bias ply tires, dana 44/60 dodge 3/4 ton axles and will pull a flatbed trailer for vehicles/scrapping/seed corn/beans on occasion. I've heard the 700r4 doesn't fair well with pulling down the highway. should I build a 4l80e? if so what one's will match my bell housing and how should I control it?
Thanks, David |
Re: what auto od should i use?
Sounds like a cool rig! It sounds like you'll have a pretty high GCVW, so a 4L80E might be the ticket... Without knowing the specs on your motor it's hard to say. Towing in drive instead of OD helps and a big cooler is always a good idea. I know the aftermarket has been constantly improving the 700r4's. Check out bowtie overdrives. They sell both tranny's. Pretty sure the bellhousing bolt patterns are the same.

Re: what auto od should i use?
motor won't be anything crazy, just reliable. it's a large oval 396 out of a 69 caprice that still runs will and has had 0 machine work done to it. i will tear it down and if needs bored i may make a 427 out of it. other than that probably 10.0-1 compression, big mutha thumper cam, hei, either edelbroch or holley multiport, super comp headers. probably aiming for the 350-400 hp range.
