Non-foulers or Hotter Plugs
I've got two cylinders that take in oil from an unknown source. I don't have the money for a rebuild, I put about 3,000 miles/year on my truck, and it still passes emissions. So this is a problem I'll have to live with for now.
The two spark plugs in these cylinders tend to foul pretty badly. I'm considering either non-foulers or hotter plugs to burn off the extra oil. In fact, I'm considering doing one, then the other as a test of which is more effective. Who has had experience with either non-foulers or hotter plugs? What results did you see? |

stopgap solutions at best neither will holdup for long

I had a small block with a couple non foulers in it. They worked ok, and when they started fouling again, I'd just take them out and clean them. I also kept a couple of extra plugs and a plug wrench setup in my truck with me just in case.

We run no foulers in our old Jubilee F*rd tractors and they work ok. Like stated above they would only be a stop gap on a vehicle that is driven more often.

Thanks all. I'm going to see if I can find the source of the oil. Considering the few miles per year I put on the truck, and having no money, I don't mind stop gap measures. It's not like I depend on this truck.

I would look at some new valve stem seals. That would be very inexpensive. They may not last long, but with the mileage you are doing might help. Anti foulers are not a very effective solution. I would put in HEI before I did them.

It probably is the valve stem seals. Is it the rear plugs? Does it smoke when you start it?

Only 1 & 3 get fouled up with oil. I've done a compression test and the results were in spec according to Chilton. The left exhaust does smoke lightly when the engine is cold. I'll take a look at the valve stems the next time I have free time to pull the cover.
Is there a way to determine where the oil is entering the cylinders from? |
