Re: (Stepside) Step plates on or off???

I've thought about that modification a few times myself, but don't really favor the style. Years ago I ran around for a few weeks with the steps off, and all I found was the rear tires threw rocks and chipped the paint on the back of the cab without the step in place for protection.

I kind of like that tubular looking bumper, but I’ve never seen it done on the front before. I actually thought about something similar for the rear of my truck. Back in the 60’s it was fairly common for gassers to use a large piece of pipe (complete with pipe caps on the ends) for a rear bumper. The pipe would then be filled with lead to add weight to the rear of the vehicle. I thought it looked very purposeful and race oriented.

If the money had not run out going for the gasser look on my truck, I seriously thought about using a 55 Pontiac split bumper up front with a Moon tank in between. The split bumpers might need to be shortened to fit the proper size tank, but the profile of the Pontiac bumper is very similar to the stock stepside rear bumper, which could make the setup look pretty natural.

Here’s a Google image showing the Pontiac bumper. I’d only be using the portion that’s chrome:

Keep the step, but smooth it

If I ran stepless I'd finish the front/lower edge of the rear fenders (like I did on my 61) and roll the lower bedside under.

1Bad62Pro, Is your grille painted or chrome? I can't tell from the pics. I have the same one on my 63 and was considering scrapping it for somethin different... I'd like to smooth out the front end a bit... any ideas? Also, I saw a 61 with the front bumper removed and a rollpan-type cover over the frame with a small lower valance that wrapped around and smoothed into the fenders. Looked SWEEEET!! I'll try to get some pics next time I run into the guy.

Been thinking about leaving the front bumper off.
If I go with a chrome bumper I may drill holes like this:

1BadPro, That first truck is AWE-TASTIC!!! It's a word, I just used it in a sentence... That makes it a word. Now, I'm considering pulling my steps off, doing a sheet metal work, and sticking my pipes out the gap!!

Re: (Stepside) Step plates on or off???

Thats exactly what I had considered doing (steps on, exhaust out under the step) but have since talked w/several folks and have been told "don't do it" that the sound gets old after awhile as it's too close to the cab. Wellllllll I'm old and can't hear anyway! (to many sirens and airhorns!) But I really like the look of the 2 1/2" or 3" exhaust with the flat tips at the steps! And as far as the step on step off debate......I can't imagine the damage without the step as I had the passenger side gravel shield missing for a couple of years and the damage from that alone was pretty severe on the step and front of the rear fender!
