73-87 VIN on Frame?
1 Attachment(s)
Just acquired a new project, plans are for a mobile welding truck.
The cab is from a 76 GMC 1/2 ton 2WD Sierra Grande but the frame is a 3/4 or 1 ton 4WD with the cast transfer case. Is there a VIN number on the frame anywhere like the 67's? Also, is there a kit for front locking hubs? The stock hubs are all time 4WD. Thanks. |
Re: 73-87 VIN on Frame?
Way cool looking truck. Love the old school fender flares. Don't see them anymore.
Yes there is a kit to convert to lock out hubs. You also have to change a gear or 2 in the transfer case. Mile Marker used to make kits but not sure if they still do. As far as VIN numbers. Mine has them all over the place. Both rails. On top and on the sides. The sides are behind the fuel tanks. On the top they are where the transfer case is. There is also numbers up front by the motor. Hope this helps. |

If it's a 203 transfer case and you install a part time kit, AT LEAST once a week drive with the transfer case in 4wd for a short period. When you installed the part time kit, certain parts no longer turn, then other parts do not get lubed. It's a splash lubricated transfer case. Good luck, Ron.
