Rear bumpers, let's see them.

Hey all, trying to decide which rear bumper to put on my 72 C20. I'm not a good visualizer so i'm asking for help. Can we see some pics?

I decided that mine looked pretty good with no bumper at all.

Not what you're looking for I bet, but here's mine. Doubles as an air tank too.

I think that is more what he's looking for. Who doesn't know what a sport bumper looks like? I like the look as much as anyone, but they don't make it easy getting into the bed on a 3/4t. I looked through my K/20 and C/20 pictures and they are about all front shots or with sport bumper. The aftermarket step bumpers look pretty good, like in the first picture. The second picture is a Bartens, which was real popular on these trucks in the western states. I really like the '72s the best of all step bumpers,if you can find a nice one. They were a one year only and made like the ones still made today except they are 4" wide rather than 8". Like the earlier style and the Bartens the bottom is where an 8" would be which makes the top a 4" lower step and your boot fits under an open tailgate. They aren't as strong as the earlier ones, since they are stamped rather than fabbed from c-channel. If you find one that isn't bent they look great on these 4wds. I always wanted to get one chromed. The fourth one is the earlier style. The fifth one is a type of aftermarket bumper offered back when these trucks were made. There are all kinds of ways to fab a good looking stout bumper, like that tube one showed. I used to run those, too. I've also made them from square tube and my favorite is 2 x 6 tube. There are companies that make HD steel bumpers, but I have no pictures.

Here is mine I liked it when I first saw the truck, it has a nice wide step. Upon further inspection, I am not so sure. It is designed for use with a slide-in camper, so the bumper is mounted on 2" square tubes that slide into "receivers" bolted to the frame.

Unfortunately, it just clamps in place. I can see on the LR corner where the PO apparently backed into something and the bumper slid in and crunched the bed. It also might be scary to throw a trailer on the hitch ball, take off and leave the trailer and bumper sitting there. There are two additional mounting holes in the center of the bumper right in front of the ball. I assume that at some point there was a third mounting bracket that attached to the frame for towing.

If I keep it, I will weld it in place or drill and pin it to prevent any "accidents".

I've got both step and sport bumpers for my K20 (both off and like my truck in need of work). I'm partial to the V43 style C-channel rear step on a 3/4 ton like the one depicted. This piece has no rust but we had to MIG weld over some bolt holes and plasma cut/grind away a hitch plate.

My plan was to have this bumper chromed but the shop I contacted said it's not possible with the diamond plate top to get a good result. I'll probably powder coat it gray.

Good luck! There's a lot of choices.
