Kevin,

My truck when I bought it had power steering on it. It never acted correctly, it would not return straight even after and alignment and a lost of caster. I pulled a box off a 62 and put it on mine with the 62's pitman arm and my existing drag link. Later on I did tie rod ends and ball joints. I found my tie rod ends were from the later 73-82 years (someone put a later disk brake front on).

Not sure this was much help, but thought I would put it out there.

When I swapped mine I Just changed the box and Pitman arm. Used rest of the parts from the power setup and it steers great. Well as great as a pickup with trick springs and 90/10s on the front can steer, LOL.

Kevin,
There may have been a problem w/ the particular power box, you had. IF anyone had ever taken the box apart, it's possible the re-assembly wasn't exactly as needed. The spool valve (it's on the input shaft side) is extremely critical to be installed correctly, incorrectly can lead to what your steering box reacted like...

The pitman arm is different when changing types of boxes. AND the flex joint on the input shaft (sometimes called a rag joint) is usually different. The flex joint also has what looks like a thin, narrow, piece of brass shim stock running through it. It is a ground strap the grounds the steering shaft.
