Steel Wheel Question?

For you guys that rock the 'factory steel' look ... what's the proper width wheel for these 285/75/R16 's that I have for my 72 4x4? I want more of the 'tall and narrow' look rather than the bulging sidewall look.

Need 8 lug factory 16" wheels too.

Thanks.

Ideally the 285/75s call for an 7"-8" wheel, which you won't find a stock wheel in. The late-SAE Ford 16" wheels,I believe are 7". But,I run 285/75s on my '92 with stock steel wheels and have for about 200,000 miles with no problems with tread wear.

Re: Steel Wheel Question?

What width are they on your 92 .... 6"?

DJMAN,
yeah, like those. How wide are those white wheels? I'm lookin for somewhere around 8. 9. or even 9.5" wide at the bead measurement ... I think?

Right?

That wheel pictured looks like a 16.5. I believe the wheels on my '92 are 6". I believe they are the same width as the stock 16" wheels that came with hubcaps.
Here are 285/75s on my '92. The '95 and '72 are mounted on 8" wheels:

Special-K,
how do you tell from a picture like that (DJMAN's) if it is a 16" or 16.5" wheel?

Just curious what the 'tell-tale' or indicator is from afar? I know you have a lot of experience with stock and aftermarket steel wheels ... just looking for the knowledge on this, if you'll share.

Thanks man.

I have Ford steel wheels on mine, they are 16x7 and are easy to find. Here is my truck with 285/75/16 tires

Re: Steel Wheel Question?

Your truck looks GREAT Joe! Let me ask you ... those Ford rims, does it matter if they come off of a van or a pickup? Is there a certain offset/backspacing that us 72 Chevy owners want to stick to? OR is it all the same, Chevy vs. Ford?

Thanks for the info.

Nice truck!

Oh yeah ... one more question ... were you able to find ford rims in WHITE or did you have to paint the black ones?

Re: Steel Wheel Question?

The ford wheels all seem to be the same, and the will be stamped 16x7 on the outer lip, so they are easy to spot, even on a truck with a tire. And , No they are grey. I painted mine white

I don't know exactly. I can just tell looking at them. They are a hair bigger from the hub,the amount of dish,L believe they are wider (maybe 7"),the profile of a 16.5 tire, and the fact that a 67/68 truck wheels (clips for hubcaps) would either be a 16" split rim or a 16.5" clincher, which I just noticed.

I believe either '96 was the last year for SAE pattern or first year for metric. Vans are probably the best source since about all came with that type wheel. A lot of pickups by the '90s came through with alloy wheels.
