tbi swap with my sm465

I'm going to swap in a 91 TBI 350 into my 69 with the original sm465 tranny.

As far as getting the tranny and engine to physcally bolt up and operate what do I need? Just a flywheel from say an 88 pickup with the sm465. It seems like I had to do something similar on a past project due to the difference with the 1 piece vs 2 piece rear main seals.

Derek, I'm going to move you over to the drivetrain area.

As far as I know, all you need is the correct flywheel for a 1-pc seal engine. The same clutch should work, bellhousing, etc.

I agree with MARKDTN. The right flywheel and everything else will bolt up.

Are you keeping the tbi or just using the shortblock in a carburated set-up? If going to the tbi, is the donor ECM unit from an automatic or a manual? You may want to rechip so it is a manual chip. You should also look into getting a VSS output for the SM465 so you can get a signal for the ECM to use. There is a website called "jags that run" that has some VSS to put in between the SM465 and the cable to your speedo.

I'm going to keep the tbi. I was thinking I'd just kinda leave the auto wiring in case I decide to put the auto in someday.

I already looked at jtr for the vss. I'm planning on keeping the cruise control :)

Another question along the VSS line:

So my donor truck (91 C1500) had the vss signal going into the instrument cluster where there is an intergral vss buffer that then puts out a signal to the ecm and cruise control module.

My understanding is the original vss in the 700r4 puts out 40 pulses/rev sine wave and the the buffer steps this up to 2000 pulses/rev square wave for the ecm and 4000 pulses/rev square wave for the cruise. The ECM and cruise both have a single signal wire going to each.

My JTR VSS is supposed to put out a 2000 pulse/rev square wave. It has 2 wires on it. Do I ground 1, and then run the other to the ECM to get the decel/edle and everything else the VSS is used for to function correctly.

Further, can I just tap into this wire and plug it into the cruise control. Granted it will think it's going half as fast as I am, but as long as it maintains speed, I don't care.

Is this all correct.
