A little over 9 inches, I did a tech on shortening one.

I like #2.

Are those flashlghts for parking lights on #1? Whoo boy I'd be afraid of that one.....apparently #2 is not molested. I'd pick # 2. when you get it running, you can tow #1 to the body shop for dad with it. Chances are, #1 will have to be rewired anyway.

Re: pops gift(to me)

Hi there. If it was my choice I prefer the five window models. They seem to have a little more value when completed too.... I,ve got a couple of these trucks, a five window and a regular cab and plan to make an extended cab 5 window with the best parts from both:)
I would suggest you cruise on over to the 67-72 chevy truck forum for more information. They are a good bunch of guy,s (and gal,s) and the site has a forum dedicated to these specific trucks
Good Luck with your project!
Check out the link to the forum...........

hah you guys telling him to go to the 67-72 forum was REALLY throwing me off......
Back to the question,
If it was me, i would jump the 5-window without question...
but that is really a question of YOUR personal choice... do you like the 5-window style? if not than dont worry...
I didn't really do a ton of research when I bought my '55 2nd series 8 years ago... and I wish i did...
now, almost 8 years to the day after I bought my small window cab, I completly tore down the truck and removed the cab last week... why? I had to have a large window...
if you have ANY desire for a 5-window cab... do it NOW or you will always be thinking about why you didn't...

Both look like fun projects, a rear-end replacement is a few hour task.. but I think those trucks have torque tubes dont they? im only really familiar with 55'-later but I would probably swap that whole drivetrain out with a more modern one anyways unless your looking for a original restoration...
Whatever truck you chose, it looks like you got a long fun project ahead of you.... just remember to save your pennies as this baby will find a way to eat them all up...

also, another tip ... MAKE SURE before you dump a bunch of money/time into the truck (whichever one you chose) that your dad has it regestered in his name. If you don't have a clean non-op or registration make sure you get one before you put your money in... dont ask why i suggest this......
Good Luck!!!

Re: pops gift(to me)

#2 looks better. If all that you want from #1 is the 5 window get #2 and then get the 5 window sheet metal from LMC or get used and add the windows your self. You'll be doing body work anyway. There is an episode of "Trucks" and they do that to a 49 Chevy. Its available to stream so you can check it out and see what I'm talking about.

Re: pops gift(to me)

just be sure to look carefully at both trucks, dont assume because truck #2 doesnt look rusty that there isnt any bondo, rust or both under that paint. At least truck #1's surface rust shows whats at the bare metal level. Research the Advance Design trucks common rust points and do a thorough inspection of each truck. paint is a minimal detail, so I wouldn't just pick a truck on aesthetics, Truck #2 may easily be in better structural shape than truck #1 ... but from the two simple pics its hard to tell.
i bought a 1957 3200 that was painted blue ... looked real clean until I figured out that it had 1/4" of bondo coating some rusted metal all over....

truck #2 LOOKS to be in good shape, and probably is in better shape than truck #1 but again, I just want to remind you that its possible that the paint is hiding something...
