Title/VIN Don't match?

I looked at a "1968" today and I am interested in buying it but I noticed the VIN Began with CS147. From what I have read that would make the truck a 1967. The VIN on the title is the same as on the VIN tag inside the door, but it says the year is 1968. The truck was purchased in Georgia (no title just a bill of sale and registration) and then titled in Florida. The owner says that the folks at the tag office never looked at the truck to verify the VIN. Seems strange but I don't think the current owner is crooked, I just think the folks at the tag office were lazy. Anyone have experience with this?

If the vin on the paperwork matches the vin on the truck I would not be worried or hesitate to move on the deal. You know it coulda been a late summer early fall build date or coulda been a leftover 67 that was titled as a 68 stranger things have happened. Does the truck have smoothsides or marker lamps in the fenders and quarters?

everything i ever titled (5 trucks 3 cars and 6motorcycles in the past 10years) in florida they have checked the VIN tag even in the pouring rain:waah:

i would have thought when they sent the paperwork in to have the title issued that the computer would have caught the discrepency

@ hugger6933 - It has side marker lights and a big back window.

@ cdowns - me too, that is why I am concerned.

Re: Title/VIN Don't match?

It's probably a typo.
If the VIN on the truck, matches the VIN on the title, then there is nothing wo worry about. The computers don't have the programs to decode what it is, they just need to fill in the blanks.
You can tell them it is a 67 when they change the title to your name, and even pring out a VIN decode page (like the on on this site for example) and show them. This will make them get up and look at your truck in case they were planning on not looking at it (make sure it has the right VIN plate rivits).
I told them my one ton was a 3/4 ton. Saves me quite a bit on my registration fees. No one even blinked an eye. It is now registered as a c/20 with a 9000 pound GVW.

Longhorn Man, that's funny, down here since a 1/2 ton books for more than a 1 ton, the ton is cheaper here!

Re: Title/VIN Don't match?

Up here they do it by GVWR, the load you are putting on the streets, not the value of the vehicle.
They tried that once, some 20 years ago, but it didn't last long. The people were very against it.

IIRC, a 1 ton (or above) truck is suppoed to be registered as a "commercial truck", which costs more anyway.

Re: Title/VIN Don't match?

A one ton single rear wheel under 10K can be registered either comercial or non comercial. It is stupid expensive once you start looking at comercial plates.
I never knew Ohio tried doing the value of the vehicle B.S. I think that is such a crock of crap... it's a road tax, not a property tax.

Depending on the state, way back when in the 60's and up into the 70's sometimes vehicle year reflected the year it was first titled/registered as new.

Re: Title/VIN Don't match?

by 64, this was deemed illegal due to safety regulations and smog regulations per federal law. I know some dealers still did it, but it was far and few between.

Re: Title/VIN Don't match?

He said it has side markers, so if it hasn't been refendered, rebedsided its a 68. Wouldn't worry about it. But you could also check the frame VIN.

I agree, everything i've ever brought in from out of state in FL the DMV visually verified the VIN number

Re: Title/VIN Don't match?

looks like a 68, sounds like a 68, titled as a 68, built late 67 as a 68 model. It's a 68. Seems pretty logical to me.

My bad Andy, I was mixing things up. It was not the license plate fees, the sales tax was based upon a "book value" rather than the price that you actually paid. It was in the early 80's, but it didn't last long. People were really mad about it. I don't remember how it was resolved though? maybe some kind of vote?

I tought they did the registration fees like that in Florida though? Maybe to make up for the lack of state income tax?

Re: Title/VIN Don't match?

I've been told ohio is doing that again if you claim you got something for next to nothing they'll (sales) tax you on the book value. Still a bit of a crock, but I can handle that since it isn't a bend over every year type like Cali, washington, I guess kentucky... and I'm sure other states do.

Re: Title/VIN Don't match?

So what you're saying is that the VIN and title DO MATCH, but the title has a bad "description" according to you. I wouldn't worry about it, because like others have said, the side markers are IAW '68 body styles, and the VIN numbers match. Last thing would be to look at the frame.

Re: Title/VIN Don't match?

@ Rob - I didn't look at the frame, should have thought of that. I also didn't take pics, but you can see pics on Okaloosa CL. This title thing and the fact that someone put a SUN ROOF in it makes it less attractive.
