'52 Pickup Rear Fender-to-bed Question
I believe that the rubber strip between the rear fenders and the bed sides is called "welting". Do I need to use this when I mount my fenders to the bed? What is the point of this stuff?

Re: '52 Pickup Rear Fender-to-bed Question
Yes it is welting, And it covers imperfections and supposedly prevents squeeeeks.
It is mostly cosmetic though. I was thinking of sewing my own in a different color than the standard black. could be interesting |
Re: '52 Pickup Rear Fender-to-bed Question
It's to preven squeeking and also to keep the two painted surfaces from rubbing and collecting water. The bed off my truck didn't have the welting on one side and you can guess which side was rusted

I personally don't like the looks of Welting, so I chose to use 3M Stipe caulk. Cajun Dragger also used it on his truck and it is mention in his build. Bascially you can place it between the two painted surfaces and just clean up what amount might squeeze out once you have it tightened down.
I used it anywhere two painted surfaces meet. Here is a picture of how mine looked when assembled. |

Re: '52 Pickup Rear Fender-to-bed Question
Thanks guys. I was wondering if I could use a caulk instead of the welting. I even considered slicing up a bicycle tire tube to slide in-between the fender and bed. I'll try some of the 3M caulk.
youngrodder ..... it's good that you mention that you've had an 11 year project. My truck project has moved at glacial speed, so I'm working towards that same schedule! |
