Rear left shock popped off nut.

The top end of my left rear shock on my ck20 (43) popped off of the upper mounting position.

The bolt that it's ring is to fit on and the rubber ring it is to sit around are still there.

Just seems to have popped off somehow.

The manual says to raise the truck on a hoist and support the rear axle. I don't have a hoist. I have a three ton jak.

How do I shorten the shock absorber to get it back on?

Would jacking the truck up let the rear axel drop enough so I don't have to shorten the shock?

My upper mounting location is the one that sits up against the top ledge of the frame rather than the type that sits on top of the top ledge of the frame.

Use a rope. Remove the shock completely. Using a rope, make one loop end. Measure the distance to compress the shock for mounting. Cut the rope at the proper length, but make a loop on it. Compress the shock and loop the rope over it. Once it's mounted, cut the rope and remove.

Is this correct:

Put the rope's loop around the unconnected top of the shock.

Run the other end under the axel and pull until the shock compresses enough to fit.

Tie other end around axel to hold shock at correct compressed length.

ReAttach top of shock to truck.

Cut off rope.

Something like this on both ends to keep the shock compressed. Mount then cut the rope. Same thing as new shocks that have the plastic loops to compress shocks in boxes.

I see. Great. Thanks.

Shouldn't the metal nut have been too large for the shock's upper ring to come off? So it's having come off means an incorrect nut for that shock must have been used?
