Upper control arm pivot shaft nut removal
Could the nuts on the upper control arm pivot shaft be removed(and new ones installed) with a pipe wrench, since I don't have that right size socket or wrench? Or is that just too ignorant? Thanks for any help.

Re: Upper control arm pivot shaft nut removal
Go to lowes and buy the right size socket. Its a smarter move. Or rent one, some places rent sockets and wrenches.

You can probably borrow one from Autozone or O'Reilly. They might ask for a deposit that will be refunded when you return the tool.

Re: Upper control arm pivot shaft nut removal
I used a pipe wrench on mine with lots of WD40 and a good few firm whacks with a hammer on the handle to get the nut started, I put the new ones on the same way, just keep them adjusted nice and tight on the nut.

Re: Upper control arm pivot shaft nut removal
Found some large sockets at Tractor Supply at a good price and took the control arm into the store to fit a socket to it, but here's the deal - the 1 & 3/8" wouldn't fit and the 1 & 7/16" socket was loose. Maybe the replacement parts(made in China) are metric. Anyway, I ended up buying a big crescent wrench for $11 and it worked just fine(did both sides) to take the nuts off and put the new ones on, with the help of a cheaper pipe of course. Thanks very much for the replies.

Re: Upper control arm pivot shaft nut removal
I bought a gigantic pair of pump pliers some years ago for a particular job and figured I'd never use it again. But... I'm always finding uses for it. Just used it yesterday to pinch axle u-bolts. Big tools are always good to have around.
