Wiper arm removal?

Hey guys! How does one get the wiper arms off? Not too sure how to do it and don't want to break them. Thanks!!

Re: Wiper arm removal?

I just use a flat screw driver with the steel cover with a rag or electrical tape, then I place a block of wood protected as well for the paint to use as a fulcrum.

I then pry up gently from the rear of the wiper arm, since it is under tension this seems to be the best place to pry up on.
be sure to wrap the arm with a T shirt, because once it pops off it will jump up and land on the hood. So wrapping it in cloth will keep it from chipping the paint, or causing some other kind of dings.

Keep in mind to, that if it hasn't been off in 40 some odd years it will take a lot of gentle prying. Since the arm piece that is pressed onto the gear is made of pot metal, and the gear is made of steel and the two could be corroded together. If it seems stuck on, try bending a WD-40 tube under there and squirt is down a bit and let soak.

Thanks so much. I'll give that a shot. I wasn't sure if it had a clip like the door handles. I thought it looked like it and I didn't want to break anything since it's going to rain all next week.

there is a tab on the back that locks them on.

That is correct, there is a tab that "locks" the arm on. But it is just a thin spring steel tab that flexes, and not all wiper arms have this lock tab and just rely on tension of the arm to keep it on.

I have found the tab is rounded enough that it will not keep the wiper on if you are applying pressure per vectorit with a covered large screw driver and a block of wood for sheet metal protection.

NAPA has a handy tool to remove wiper arms.

Thanks guys! Got them off fairly easy after some WD40.
