Storing Our Trucks On Jack Stands
 

Howdy all,

Not so much a new member here, been a lurker for a long time, but I just picked up a square body last week... Been a long time since i have owned one... Damn its good to back behind those wheels...

Anyways, I own a 2wd crew cab dually in the Great White North that originally is from Cali... Any one in here North of Utah knows why i want to store this thing and never let it see snow...

My problem is mice. I grew up on the farm and I have seen what mice do to a vehicle in a winter, I am reminded every fall i get into the grain truck.

I was thinking of putting the truck up on 6 jack stands enough to get the tires at least 3 inches up off the ground.

Yes I know mice can climb jack stands, but we use these little bags with god knows what in them do keep the mice out of the cabs of our combines and such so i was going to put a punch around the bottom of the stands...

Is there any problems that could arise from storing it on jack stands? They will firmly put on concrete so no sicking or any thing...

Your thoughts?

ive actually wondered this as well oddly...never know if something could get bent or twisted over time?

Well when you think about it... its no different then it sitting on its wheels, but i'd toss 2 extra ones in the middle of good measure.

and if its on concrete i can't see the jacks moving and twsiting the frame... but you never know...

Great looking crew!! Jack stands will be fine, I dont see how they could bend over time, if so in this sue happy world they would have warning labels. BTW mice can jump more than 3in. LOL

hi hick
we use bounce sheets for the dryer in our trailer seems to work havn't found any since using them,and it's a popular thing in the park to use for that reason
i've got a friend that swears the best way is jack it up,
high enough to get the tires off the ground,
and then he puts a small piece of wood under the wheel to keep it from full extention,
not weight bearing tho

Ive always been told that the best way to accurately store a car/truck long term is to place it on jackstands.. doing t his so the tires are off the ground will prevent flat spots on the steel belts if the tires deflate over time,Its also better for the wheel bearings.
Put your mouse begone around it and you should find a perfect truck when you pull it down in the spring

Hick: Welcome!
We're farmers too, so know your mouse pain. We have packrats, too. I've have good results with putting the mouse/rat poison in packages in our cars/trucks/machinery. You don't need to open the packages, they'll eat a hole to get to the poison. (my wife told me that, didn't believe her 'til I tried it). Engine compartments, trunks, everywhere.
Some guys use Irish Spring soap bars, or moth balls.

I don't see why using jackstands for storage isn't a good idea, too.

We have problems with pack rats in AZ, even in the city. I have a storage trailer up on blocks to save the tires, and the trailer has wiring along the frame joined together with brightly colored plastic butt connectors. Pack rats chewed through every connector - these seemed to be attracted to bright colors. One thing that I have seen work out here are those flypaper sticky type mouse traps. Usually you put peanut butter on the sticky paper and the mice/rats get stuck on the paper. In your case, I would just put a lot of the sticky paper down around the jacks. It is sad to see the little guys flail around stuck to the paper, but it is the only thing I have seen work consistently.

Sticky paper or those glue trays all the around the truck like a moute around a castle for a first line of defence.

If you store it on jack stands put them under the suspension not the frame. Put 2 under your rear axle and 1 under each lower control arm. this will keep the waight on your suspension and not let it drop out.

You know, I had planned on doing that anyways but thank you for mentioning my suspension... I am so used to a 4x4, the control arms would have never crossed my mind

I would not use poison. The mice may eat the poison then die some place in your truck. You will be smelling a dead mouse until you can find him. Use a mouse trap. Use peanut butter for bait. Then check the traps every day.
