GMC 228 exchange for 292
I currently have a 1947 GMC 1/2 ton pickup with a 228 engine in it, (the engine is not going) the question is, can I bolt up a 292 to the gearbox and make up some engine mounts?

I believe the bellhousing is different. I also think it would be best than to rely on a 64 year old transmission ;)
Grab a NV3500 (5 speed) and a non-torque tube rearend 8.5" (a 3.42 or 3.73) from a s10 Blazer 4X4 (92-up) works well. |
Re: GMC 228 exchange for 292
I understand what you are saying.
I have a 1967 donor with all the running gear / motor 292 the original gearbox and I have a comaro diff. Do you know what gearboxes came in the C10 1967 1/2 ton pickup it is a stock 292 and it is 4 speed box? How do I tell the difference between the Sagnaw or a Muncie? Would the box in the donor 67 be a good option to put in the 1947 GMC pickup? I would really like to be able to pickup one of the gearboxes you are describing, but they are just not off the shelf here, being in Australia has its disadvantages. |
Re: GMC 228 exchange for 292
As they say I have let my fingers do the walking, research has proved to me that I have an SM465 box.
So in your opinion if I run the following I would have a pretty good set up. Engine -1967/292 Gearbox - SM465 Diff - Comaro - It is a drum brake 3.08 or 3.31 or it is close to this ratio. |
Re: GMC 228 exchange for 292
The weak point will be the camaro rear. I would try for a truck 12 bolt rear if you can. The 292 with a granny gear will rip open a camaro axle.

You can narrow them.

Question, if I run the original diff from the 47 its probably going to be to lower ratio, I have the original diff in the 67 C10, that would mean I would exchange the complete running gear from the 67 C10 into the (AD) truck. Is a standard 67 C10 diff the correct width to fit in the (AD) truck? |
