Hey fellers, I'm doin a pro-street build on my '69 & need ya'lls opinion on what mufflers to run. Right now I have dual 2" pipe off my headers into Flowmaster 40 series with tail pipes dumpin right behind the rear wheels at kinda an angle down. I'm runnin a .030 over 454, .525 lift cam Lunati 60201LK, old smog oval port heads I want to change, performer RPM with a 3310 vac. secondary and Flowtech headers from Summit. I've read that Flowmasters restrict alot & Dynomax or Borla is a pretty good flowin muffler. I'm wantin to run 3" pipe back to mufflers then a short pipe over the rearend turned down. I'm gonna run a full pos unit & keep my 3.73 gear. My truck will see the drag strip ever once in a while. If I find a set of 781 heads I plan on goin up a couple sizes on my cam, like the Lunati 60203LK & runnin a Hughes 2500 converter in my TH400. What do ya'll think?

Bigger heads and exhaust should help. I took 3 inch flowmasters loose from my truck at the track one night and ran open hedders and it picked up a tenth in the eighth mile. I ran dynomax bullets after that! I am gonna run cut outs and 3 inch exhaust on my son's truck. It has a mild 454 and 781's.

There are 2 mufflers I like. The first is a hooker aerochamber and the second is the warlocks.

The aerochamber is quiet yet flow great. Only problem is weight.

The warlocks are like a flowmaster with the chamber design however, you can pull a plug out of them and they are a straight through design at that point. Basically open headers. I was running a 3" x-pipe with the warlocks and electric cutouts on them when I first got the truck going. Sounded awesome.

I decided to shave some weight so I put dual cut outs right off the header, knecked down to 2.5" and hung some turbo mufflers right in front of the rear tires. Light, quiet but can be wide open in seconds.

I'll throw my .02 in. I'm currently running Dynomax Race magnums. They're similar to bullets, only bigger in diameter and quieter. They're a straight-thru type muffler. I picked up 1.5 tenths in the 1/8 just by going from 3 1/2 Flowmasters to these mufflers. My only complaint is how loud the inside of my cab is, but that's not the mufflers' fault. I have them mounted right underneath the cab and after a long cruise, my ears are ringin' pretty good. I plan on moving them back underneath the bed and this should quiet things down inside the cab.
Your plan for running 3" past the axle sounds like a good one, especially if you're going to drive it a lot.

Yep, while my truck is gettin painted I'm gonna have the motor & trans in my garage doin some upgrades to them. I'm watchin CL, Ebay & Racin Junk for some 781 heads that are known to be good. If I find a set I can afford then I'll do the cam & Pete Jackson gear drive swap when I do the heads. I think I'm gonna go with Borla mufflers & 3" pipe from the opinions I've gotten so far. Thank you for your advise.

Thanks for the link Man!! I found a set of 291 heads. Whats the difference in the 781 head?

Ohh, I looked on my castin number page. They're a closed chambered head & rectagular port. I wonder what my CR would be if I went with a 290 head zero decked assumin they weren't out to far.

I'm running a Borla muffler on my '95 shortbed Chevy and love the deep tone of this system. So if you go this route you will really enjoy it.

WOW!!! My muffler guy won't do 4", lol. He don't like doin 3" but he will for some folks. Is that the 40 or 44 series? Looks great!

I'm sure gonna go with Borla's but I've gotta wait till we get back from vacation. I talked to my muffler buddy & for 3" from the headers to the rearend with turn downs at an angle is $150.00 & me bring my muffler's.

Thanks for the Bad A** link. I was thinkin about goin with the Borla Sportsman round case. I'm also lookin at the Dynomax Race Bullet's. They're about a hundred bucks cheaper & i've heard they flow pretty good. I'm also gonna have an H pipe put in. My muffler buddy won't do the X pipe, say's he did one on a mustang one time & won't never do a notherin, lol.

Here's my 3" exhaust on my '63 chassis with the Borla XL Series mufflers. I went to the outside of the frame since my gas tank is located between the frame behind the reared housing...also, I wanted it to exit in front of the rear tires. But, it can be done inside of the frame rails. This allowed me to keep the entire exhaust above the bottom of the frame since my truck will end up pretty low. I wouldn't worry about an H-pipe, if that ends up being an obstacle, especially since on a 3" diameter system will put a tube pretty low for the cross pipe.

I run 3" mandrel bent with an x-pipe and Dynomax Super Turbos. I like it, but it's pretty quiet. I used to run Dynomax Race Magnums, but they were louder, but make good power! .02

Thanks for the info on the Dynomax mufflers. Anybody else runnin em? I'm just wonderin if the Borla's are $100.00 worth better than the Dynomax. I would go with their race muffler if I decide to go with them but I sure like the reviews i've read on the Borla's.

I have a set of Flowmaster Hushpowers (3 1/2") their pretty loud for the street, I don't drive my truck a whole lot, so I don't really mind. I don't run to far past dark with it, my neighbors would get sick of me quick otherwise. ET wise couldn't tell you... Pretty pricey units is their draw backs... But, they do have a awesome low sound.
