The hard way...
Find a donor truck that has all of the emission devices still on the motor. You will need a service manual for the specific year to figure out all of the missing pieces; along with manifold air tubes, air pump, cat, etc..... The easier way... Find a back allay shop, leave $20 on the dash, and tell'em to hook you up. Seriously, I struggled for 4 years trying to get a 1985 Jeep wagoneer to pass emissions (those things probably failed emissions from the factory in new condition). This was the only way that I could get it past emissions. The shady way... Find a vin # off of a C20HD or C30 truck (the models over Gvw9600# are exempt in most states) in the junkyard (one that is heading for the crusher), use that vin #. |

Also, I don't know if your state has the visual inspections or not. Our state doesn't visually inspect. If they don't visually inspect, then you may get by without the air pump, air tubes, etc. I would plan on a pair of high performance cats, and then lean out the mixture. That may get you past the test for this year. After passing the test, I would remove the cats until the following year.

Mine would never pass on it's own so i would get a block away and then pull over and lean out the mixture and retard the timing and it always passed but thankfully I don't have to worry about that anymore as it is old enough now to not need a etest

If your state does not have visual inspection, if the motor is properly tuned, it may pass the "sniffer" test.
If you do have visual inspection, it won't matter how clean it runs, it will fail because the emissions equipment is gone. Unfortunately, putting that stuff back on can get expensive. |
