gear selector
on my 84 my 700 tranny went out and i found another used rebuilt one. Now that i have it all replaced the gear selector isnt working. To get into park i have to shove the shifter all the way to the left. Reverse takes up nearly the whole sweep and d or first is all the way to the right. I havent driven truck yet to see if its 1 or d.
what should i be looking at? thanks matt |
Re: gear selector
There should be notches for each gear built into the steering column to lock the selector into. I'd would looking at that. You will probably have to drive it to figure out where your gears are at.

Re: gear selector
There are no notches in the steering column itself; the detente's are in the trans internally.
Remove your Instrument Panel cluster bezel; you should find a small edge clip that fastens to the shifter bowl of the column connected to a rubber band/string that drives the indicator needle. Put the column/trans in "N", and slide that clip on the bowl until the indicator is centered on the "N". You should be all set at that point (assuming the linkage to the trans is adjusted correctly). You may need to ensure the rubber bandy/string is routed correctly as well. K |
Re: gear selector
how should linkage at tranny be adjusted? i just slide the rod thru the part on the trans.
i will check the indicator with it in N. thanks matt |
Re: gear selector
i forgot to respond to this
but on the linkage on th side of the tranny, one rod goes into a bracket that uses a plastic washer, mine had fallen out, therefore not allowing the shifter to be correct. Once i put the washer back into place, all is well again. thanks matt |
