New hubs for a '68 1/2 ton?
My drivers side hub is binding up and I need a replacement. It's a 1/2 ton 68 suburban with hubs I've never seen before, they are stamped "cutlass" Definately original. Does anyone know if I can swap the innards only and retain the original cutlass dials? Or do I have to go with some aftermarket swap instead :(
Thanks, Tim |
You should take the hubs apart to see if there is any visible damage or wear first. I have oddball hubs on my truck too, they didn't function correctly at all. I disassembled them and they were in great condition, so I just washed them in mineral spirits, regreased them, and reassembled them. Now they work great and lock positively all the time and never do any funny business.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll post on here when I do the work. It'd be great if I could save these beauties, and keep those warn generic hubs at bay.
Thanks again, Tim |
Yeah, I was thinking along the lines of some Warns for mine, but seeing as how the original ones worked fine after I cleaned them, I decided to keep. The only advantage I can see Warns having over stock is that they aren't made out of cast metal like mine are, I suppose if I hit 'em hard enough on a rock or a curb they will break like glass. But I am not a hard-core offroader, so I'll keep the $150.

I pulled the drivers side out and cleaned it up, the plastic bushing/sleeve thing was cracked...I glued it I "lubriplated" it, put it back toegether....and it's still popping out. Anyone think it's possible that my spring is worn out enough to not apply enough pressure to keep it in?
Does anyone have a source for these springs or bushings? Thanks again, Tim |

When I was looking for lockouts for my '68 I found out that they are not available aftermarket, not even Warn makes them. I ended up replacing the hubs with those from a '69. Lockouts for these are readily available. I kept the lockouts from my '68. One of them works fine and the other one does the same thing that you are describing. I will sell them both for $20.00 if you want them.

Breeh, thanks, mine look totally different from that. Are those pictured from a 3/4 or 1/2 ton? Maybe mine are old aftermarket ? Mines a 1/2 ton, and the hubs dials say "cutlass" on them. I'll try and get a picture, but it'll be a while. Thank you for the info on the lack of an aftermarket source. So you swapped your entire hub for some '69's, and then just the lockouts for some aftermarkets?

That is from a 1/2 ton. I believe it to be a factory lockout because there is a decal in the cab next to the shift pattern that states that the truck is equiped with Warn Hubs. I happened to have a closed knuckle front from a 69 laying around and that is where I pirated the hub assemblies. If you look at aftermarket lockout suppliers you will see that they state that the parts fit from '69 and up.

Hey breeh, would you sell me those hubs? I need a spare for my '64 and those are the exact same thing. I'll send you a PM. Thanks.
