Swapping T221 for a NP205
Guys,
I have searched and read every post on replacing 221's and I dont understand why so many modificaitons would be required if the 205 came in trucks from 69 to 72. Almost everything else is interchangable so why would you need to reposistion carrier bearing's, relocation cross members 2inch's back etc. I read YukonJacks thread and its seem like a lot of work to replace in a 67/68 something that came in a 69-72. I am replacing what turned out to be a bad sm465 and am trying to decide to dump the 221 for a 205 that I have. |
Re: Swapping T221 for a NP205
The reason you need to do all of that is because they are different. The cross member is in a different spot, and will not bolt up without moving it.

I talked to a shop in town that said the same as BurnoutNova on this issue.

Ok, thanks guys, I just have to decide if it's worth changing out the 221 for a 205 when I change the trans.

Re: Swapping T221 for a NP205
just my opinion, but put the tcase on the tranny that fits without buying an adapter. Both the 221 and 205 are good, I am swapping a 205 onto a 465 only because my 221 finally wore out after 44 years. If the 221 is in good shape and mounts to the 465 use it.

Re: Swapping T221 for a NP205
I have both right now, a 205 with the 465 adapter and the 221 that's in the truck now. I am leaning with just reinstalling the 221 after I get the 465 rebuilt, thank for your input!

Re: Swapping T221 for a NP205
One of the biggest issue is that the rear output is placed in a totally different height position on the T221 compared to the NP205 so without changing the placement of the carrier bearing the rear driveshaft won't be in the right position. There are some trucks that don't use the two piece rear driveshaft and therefore won't have the carrier bearing issue.

Re: Swapping T221 for a NP205
Since the 205 came in 69 -72 a donor truck would have all the right parts. I see a pretty beat up 4x4 which i think is a 70 for sale close to my house. If i use its cross member, drive shafts and carrier i should be able to bolt it in other then repositioning the cross member. Still not decide which direction to head. I have time since I have not even started the disassembly yet.

Re: Swapping T221 for a NP205
Well my donor truck turned out to be 68 with a Rockwell. I think I am going with the 205. So i I need a 69-72 transfer case cross member and since I assume most had a 2 piece drv shaft the carrier bearing mount as well. I will worry about the drive shafts later. Need to post in for sale WTB these parts. Since I just squeezed the truck into my garage I will have time as I need to remove the transfer case, Adapter and trans. Not looking forward to any of this.

Re: Swapping T221 for a NP205
For all the hassle of swapping you could probably just rebuild your t221 and get another 40 years of great service. Parts may be a little tougher to find but I know you can get all bearings and seals.

Re: Swapping T221 for a NP205
The 221 seemed to be in working condition other then a few small leaks. Plus I do have a second one but decided to go with the 205. Maybe someone local to nj can use it. I will have to post it once it get the truck back together. Right now i am battling with getting the trans out.
