Restored my 72 Woodgrain Glovebox Door
 

I haven't updated my build thread in a while, due to work, family, and life in general...but I have still been hard at work on the finishing touches ;)

I found an aftermarket woodgrain decal in my parts stash and decided to give it a try...since the NOS one would run me $$$. I do not know if the woodgrain is "correct", but it does match the aftermarket door panels and the applique I have on deck for the gauge cluster. I am pretty happy that I have made aftermarket parts work. :lol:

Wow that looks pretty good! Do you know what brand it was? I had to do mine twice due to the fact that the first one was too small. Had to get the one that's designed to be put on the glovebox door without the aluminum piece because it was bigger then had to trim to fit. Was a real pita.

Any tips/tricks to the install? Was it difficult to set the decal into the recess where the latch is? You've inspired me to make use of the decal I've got sitting on my shelf.

If that decal is faded mate, I have a perfectly good repro one you can have...FOC, I bought it from Classic Parts back when I had no idea that having a Cheyenne did not necessarily mean it was a super:lol:
Anyway it's yours if you want it...gives me a chance to pay it forward after board member CG did the same for me recently.

First off, thanks for all of the compliments!

I believe it was an older Re-Pop brand, which means it was made in the USA :metal: It fit very well, the dimensions were near exact.

Pete- This was the question I was waiting for. If anyone has ever tried to apply one of these, the recess presents a problem. The decal comes with a small hole, just big enough for the actual button to fit through...so how do you get it to conform to the recess? It is somewhat rigid material so it does not flex. I have seen where others cut the hole larger, or cut slits around the edge, either way it ends up looking like crap so...

I removed the the latch assembly (and Super emblem), and applied the decal. I then held the door upside down while I CAREFULLY used a Bic lighter to heat it up where it sits above the recess. I then set it down and using my thumb, I worked around it in a circle, pressing down firmly. The trick is to get it hot enough to "stretch" the material, but not melt the decal. It will conform to the recess and sticks permanently. After that, I just pushed the latch through and reattached it. IMO it came out perfectly and looks like it left the factory that way.

Nigel- My photo skills suck :lol: I did not use a flash, so the pics are a little blurry. Thanks for the offer on the Emblem, but mine does look better in person than the pics show.

Thanks Harold! I am tackling a bezel next and will use the same technique with a lighter to get the decal to conform and stick. May be a bit before I get it installed. I have one that I already did in there now...wish I would have used the decal on a better bezel, but this will give me a chance to try a new way of attaching it too.

Looks good to me. If it matches your door panels and the part you will use on the instrument cluster, what's the problem?

A friend gave me a full roll of DyNoc vinyl in a GM parts "tube" that is from the mid-Seventies and intended for use on the exterior of one of the GM wagons with woodgrain. I have debated with myself about using it to do my cluster and glovebox door. I have door panels from a '70 that have the woodgrain strip below the window, so thinking about making it all match. I don't have a Cheyenne, but a Custom DeLuxe. Since it isn't a resto, what difference will it make to me? It'll look good. Besides, woodgrain was a big styling gimmick in the mid-Seventies and it won't look like it is from the wrong era.

Nice work Scot, I will put in my 2 cents about getting that area around the glovebox lock button stuck down. Use a heat gun, and they will lay out very nice. Trevor

I have to redo my box to with woodgrain. How do you attach the emblem and how where they originally attached from the factory?

Thanks Trevor- I thought about that at first....but I do not own a heat gun, so I busted out the Bic. :lol: I am very happy with how this came out.

The emblem is attached with barrell clips. I removed it carefully by prying it off with a butter knife, working around it. After attaching the decal, it just presses back in.
