changing from GMC to Chevrolet?

I am tring to imagine problems (leagal) restoring our '85 GMC to a Chevy Scotsdale 10 We know it is just some plastic badges, but would I have trouble after a trafic stop? Why change it, that's what the Lad wants.
Thanks, I am in Illinois, maybe cash would help.

It would be a Chevrolet clone. I see no legal repercussions from it.

the state goes by the VIN stamped on the dash and chassis.. as long as those remain untouched you could put the emblems from a toyota pirus on it if you so chose and there is no problem.. Ive rebadged one of my older trucks like that and it was never an issue

Selling it to friend's 14 year old Nephew and will help in finishing. He wants to make it a chevy. I am so impressed he is as interested in it as he is. I should post some pictures as time goes by. He is charged up.

I agree that there wouldn't be any legality issues, however that's plenty of reason to get pulled over unnecessarily by the police.

I don't think so.....

If the vehicle has no code violations & no traffic offense occurred, a guy isn't going to get pulled over because his GMC no longer indicates it's a GMC.

Re: changing from GMC to Chevrolet?

919 has a valid point. some police will question the tag to the vin because of badging. however this will depend on the law enforcement agency, although it would be 100% legal. as long as nothing illegal is done to raise suspicion, having the vin match the plates would be all the proof you need.

Up here in the rust belt you see lots of gmc's with chevy tail gates, body panels ect, never heard of anyone having any problems.

Nah, either A: cops know their chevy and know its just a badge change, or B: cops dont know their chevys and think their all the same.

If I had a pinto that had Scottsdale 30 badges on it, I dont think they would care, as long as the License plate was legal and had no violations to attract their attention. besides, if a cop is behind you, he's running your tag anyway, just because you're there and he is too.

Most people know GMC and chevy are the same anyway. and if they don't, they're so far away from being a car guy it won't matter anywho.

By the way, when we were racing the GMC stepside we would convert it to Chevy so that we could run the local "Super Chevy" events.

We would change the grille and tailgate, but left the fender emblems and horn button (and IP pad nameplate) as GMC. Nobody ever called us out on it.

Being also in IL I don't think they'd ever question it a guy I know did that and has never had trouble but as with being pulled its always gonna depend on the officer Id say

Re: changing from GMC to Chevrolet?

As long as it looks like a truck and the VIN matches the registration I doubt an officer would care which badges it has.

I do remember getting the odd grille from the bodyshop at the local GMC dealer when they had a GMC come in with a Chevy grille ...I think the going price back then was a case of beer for the boys in the shop.

Re: changing from GMC to Chevrolet?

I had a chevy tailgate, gmc fender emblem, chevy registration paper (I gave him an expired one from the previous owner), and the plate registered to a gmc and wasnt questioned.
