Are short steppers that rare?
 

We attended the Good Guys show in Scottsdale this weekend and I saw only 1 65 short stepside c10 at the show.

LOTS of fleetsides, mostly 70's and up but 60's trucks were almost non existant.

What's up with that?

I'm sure someone will jump me, but I believe the fleetsides are more popular. My s/b was a stepper and I got rid of the bed to change to a fleet.

I agree with him. Alot of times guys ditch the step for a fleet.

Also... Alot of guys will not do a GG show becuase they think it is a rip off. Go to a local free show and you will probably see more. This was mine. The first picture was at a GG show around 2001 and the 2nd was coming home from Tahoe from a show that dosn't happen anymore. This truck is now a Fleetside becuase i wanted to put it back to orignal.

Since the bed was used for so many years, I wonder how much of it was guys buying the used 60's stuff to repair the 55-59 trucks. (Always blame the older generation lol).

Around me, I've me 2 other owners and seen a few more on the road, ever one a fleet side.

more swb step sides were produced then fleets. they are not rare at all.

Very true. I always see more steps than I do fleets. Esp the SWB's. I very rarely see a long step side.....I still kick myself for not getting a '61 SWB that a guy was selling for $1250 not too far from where I'm at, but it's all I can do to work on my own. My son asked me if he could have that old truck in the garage when he turned 16. I told him "Not that one,but I'll help you find another one." That '61 woulda been sweet.

I personally had a short step and could not wait to ditch it for a fleetside bed. I thought it just didn't look very good on these trucks, but then again I was able to sell my short step bed very quickly to someone who was super excited to find one.

i like them all. I am surprised that so many people want to get rid of theirs. its funny cause remember how popular the 90's ext cabs with a fg sort of stepside were popular. You would see them everywhere

Funny how everybody wants a fllet now. Years back you couldn't give them away and now they are getting pretty hard to find in good condition.

Every truck I have ever owned has been a stepper until I bougt a 2001 Ford Super Crew.

I rarely see them at shows or out on the road.

Yeah they are not that rare but since they are less desireable seems like they are rare at the shows. Which is kinda cool to me :metal:

When I was younger, all I could find shortbed-wise were steps. Couldn't find fleetbeds to save my a**. Given, I am in the north east....

I will tell you from my experience it depends on what you are looking for. If you want to buy a fleet, they seem to be more rare, but if you are looking to buy a stepper, then they seem to be more rare.

Then when you finally land what you are looking for, you see them all over the place. Just the way it always works for me.

I bought mine because it is as old as I am. But I've had both wide and step. I kinda like step side ,don't see them much around here. But I always say it's big and ugly just like me.:lol:

I think part of the reason short steps are currently harder to find, is because they were so popular with young guys when they were new. Most got used up like Chevy two door coupes, sedans, and hardtops. Four door sedans in great shape were around much longer because they were considered family cars and useless as chick magnets. That's how young guys viewed fleetside trucks in the 60's, they were "old man" trucks. They were either commercial fleet vehicles or belonged to some old guy that went fishing with a camper on the back.

In 1962 a neighbor bought a brand new 62 deluxe long fleetside. His first comments were almost apologetic to his son and I - “I know the shortbed stepsides are more popular, but I think the longbed fleetside looks better balanced with the new body style.” He also added a camper and kept it for many years, and was about 40 years old when he bought the truck. Times change, and with rarity many things become popular.

how was goodguys. i went last year and i think its the last time i go. way over priced and the swapmeet wasn't great, not like it used to be.

The local Goodguys event in August was also my last time. I'm done paying for the privilige of making the Meadors family richer, when they should be providing free entry to the partiicipants. Without us they wouldn't have a show and would lose all the spectator revenue. From now on I'll be attending local charity shows instead.

I was pretty disappointed to be truthful.

The swap meet really didn't have much chevy and nothing 60's for sale and the showing itself was confusing.

Maybe if they could park by brand or year it would be easier to see what you were interested in instead of walking around for 6 hours seeing stuff you could care less to see.

The vendors inside were okay, not great and the ones outside were pretty busy.

I might go again in the spring but now I have seen one i'm not going to go out of my way.

ya i agree, its a free for all as far as parking goes etc. its mainly just muscle cars in my opinion. same cars with different colors, not much in the 60's 50's or older. i've been to a few but this last one (march i think) is prob my last, for the money that was spent just to get in the door. the swap meet used to be the best part of it but not lately, and the vendors are now more there than the local swap meets.

I dont know about the rest of the country, but in the south, the short bed stepside is much harder to find than a longbed fleetside

Most of the trucks around here are step sides. Fleets are hard to find.

When I was growing up, the short steps were the most desireable, nobody wanted a fleetside. I personally own('64) & like a short fleet better, I think it depends on the truck & year. I also have a '71 long fleet 4x4 that I like the look of, although the short fleets are more in demand.
