Replacing gas tank sending unit HELP
 

I pulled the tank out of my truck so I could replace the cab corners. I poured the gas out of the tank while I had it out cause there was a bottle lid in it. The gauge was fine when I pulled the tank and when I put it back in its stuck on full. When I ground the wire it goes to e so I believe the float is stuck. But I don't know how to pull the unit out. It has no bolts. Any help we be greatly appreciated.

It is held in with a lock ring. You will need to use a screwdriver and hammer to rotate the lock ring so the sender can be removed

It has a lock ring, get a punch or chiesel and tap the ring till it lines up and should pop right out

Is it like a regular ring or different. Kinda looks like it turns 1/4 and releases

I'm having the same problem. I just replaced mine and I think I'm going to have to take it back out and try again. Someone else may be able to put it to words better, but here's some pictures:

Ok. What I was thinking. Hoping mine is just stuck where I had it upside down.

Will do. I'm gonna pull mine out tomorrow and see. Worked fine before I turned it upside down.

Maybe i am reading this wrong. Is your tank full or empty?

Was empty when I put it back in and it showed way past full. Put 5 gallon back in it and still showing way past full. Goes to empty when I in hook wire and tuch it to a ground.

Does not sound like the float is stuck. It will always go past full when the ground is off. And the fact that it goes to empty with ground on, seems like float is not stuck.

I take that back. Either the float is stuck in the empty position or you did not add enough gas to get a good reading.

THE RUBBER O Ring on the unit is keeping it from grounding wire brush and clean all parts taht make contact with tank and sending unit (where the locking ring is at)

Take a good look at the float in FLCustom's post #5 you may have jarred the float loose from the arm when you shook the lid out.

Make sure that the gas level is low enough so that it doesn't leak out or siphon the gas out of the tank first. I used to do a lot of work on gas tanks at a dealership I worked at in Texas an invariably the owner of the car would stop and fill the tank on the way to the dealership to have the tank worked on.

If it is at 3 o'clock, you generally will either have a float stuck high or an open circuit.

I replaced mine when I first got it (same ohm results - found it was a bad unit). A couple of months later it stopped working (don't remember where the needle went to though). Pulled it apart and found that the strap (1/2" wide, black coated, assume it takes the place of a wire, connects the sender rheostat to the wire stud) was grounding itself against the pick-up tube. Pulled it away and it worked fine.

When you pull the sender, put an ohm meter on it. As you move the arm through it's range of motion, it should read from 0-90 ohms. If the circuit shows infinite ohms, your sender is bad.
