Straighten Your Tailgate?

1 Attachment(s)
Just jack up an old F**d, set the tailgate on a couple of 2x4 blocks and let it down a little...be careful not to go too far! Two guys jumping on an original Chevy tailgate won't bend it but about 1250 lbs or F**D will!

Very interesting :)

Took out a 1" bow in the gate! There was a crease in the outer top rail where someone backed into a pole or something. I pulled that with lots of heat and a slide hammer but it would not take out the bow. It looks great now! A little bondo and we are good to go!

Hehe, I've actually done that before, wasn't a tailgate but I can't remember exactly what.

Smooth68 04-19-2003 11:20 PM

I can honestly say I would of never thought of that....who needs technology!

beats the hell out of jumping on it lol. Fat men can't jump :D
Wish I would have thought of doing that when I did mine last week.

I layed a wood block on each end of my tailgate, a 2x6 across the top, and a short plank for a ramp and kept creaping up the plank with the tire until the tailgate was straight, hey great minds do think alike

I thought about driving up on it but kept wondering what vehicle to use so I did not use too much weight...then the "dim" bulb went on! I could control it with the jack...it only took about 1.25 inches to get it straight...about .25 inch spring back.

I am going to take the 0.25 inch bow out of my hood the same way. Wait until I show you how I am going to pull the dent out of my other '67 hood...LOL!

I like your idea better, theres no guessing and jumping in and out of the truck

sgtjed 04-20-2003 04:21 AM

me and my dad have broken beads on tires with a car before, beats taken the rim to a tire shop to have the tire taken off. of course we used crow bars to pry the tire off.

i think i gonna do my tail gate like that too

bobs409 04-20-2003 07:08 AM

Those Fords have to be good for something eh? :D

theo70 04-20-2003 08:06 AM

As long as the F**d doesn't get any dillusions of grandeur...

bigblock73 04-20-2003 09:43 AM

Why does the Ford van have custom wheels? Shouldn't you be spending your $$ on the Chev? :) :D

Dont try that with an aftermarket gate, you'll flatten it

Low69CST 04-20-2003 12:22 PM

My dad and I straightend a bumper one time by chaining it to the garage floor and driving off, definately a memorable experience.

Longhorn Man 04-20-2003 02:46 PM

Some one mentioned something close to this about 1.5 years ago on here....except he just drove over it and ended up bowing it the other direction.

PICKMUP 04-20-2003 02:51 PM

I tried pushing in a front bumper, that had been pulled out towing with a chain or something. Just gently pushed it against a tree. Did you know the top of the grill sticks out just as far as the bumper...Ooooops! Fixed the $50 bumper---bent the $300 grill.

Now thats what I call being resourceful.:)
