Winter Time
Winter is setting in and I'm ready to replace my leaking heater core. Mainly for my girlfriend bc she gets cold. I've never replaced a heater core before and i have an idea of how to do it. My question is that do I really need to take the hood off as well as fender cover? If anyone has done this project can you give any suggestions? Any suggestion would be much appreciated:waah:

Hood no,
Inner fender, makes life easier unless you got the right tools to get to the bolts under the heater box....If its a CA truck, you shouldn't have any issues removing the inner fender well. Smitty |

No need to pull the hood. Just remove the inner fender.

I replaced the heater core on both my 72 GMC and 69 C-10 and didn't have to remove the hood or the fender well. Maybe I was lucky but both came out no problem.

I never had to remove inner fender either (unless it was out, i forgot) did have to loosen hood hinge

Spray the heck out of the bolts with PB Blaster under the lip of the fender and under the battery box..They're probably OK being a Ca truck.You just need to drop it loose,no need to take it out.You'll probably need to replace the rubber gasket and the goo on the heater box.Check the fan blades and the fan motor.

I fought mine for about a half hour, then took the 10 minutes to remove the inner fender well. Pretty simple fix. Took around an hour or so overall (not counting the wasted half hour).
Heat is a good thing, and a happy girlfriend is too. |

i ended up taking the fender out. made the job a lot easier, plus with my air tools it took no time at all. i also found rust so im in need of reparing it. and since my engine bay is painted flat black i cleaned up the fender:bann:

I did the same thing but i did take the hood off and the inner fender makes for me to work right on top of it and it took me 1 full day to clean and repaint rerun all the new heater control cables and Gaskets washed the outer cab sanded it and painted where needed and put the new controller back in.
Now you have to remember I bought all new Re pop parts for this heater nothing old was reused other then the housing. Now i oppeded to run the AC blower instead of the heater blower for one it blows faster and uses more amps But it will warm your truck up in a fast way got my cab up to 130 Degree's in 3 mins.I've always loved my heaters. But i like to do the full o0n job like redo the radiator thirmisstat and hoses and i even changed the fan clutch Now the I've stopped using the heater control box on NONE Air trucks do to i can control how fast the motor will turn plus the fan switch is easyer to replaced . Most people over look the heater core until it gets cold I use mine year round in the hot days it can really help to cool your truck down I'm working on a way to push it back in to the engine compartment during a Really hot day so i can keep my engine cool on the hard loaded days i run it. |

yeah a couple days it got so hot my truck over heated but with the heater working that should fix that, i also insalled a shroud. i need to do a little repair on the box with some fiber glass to fix some minor cracks, my goal with this truck is to build it as cheaply as possible but make it look as nice as possible.
Did you have any rust where the fender well connects to the radiator support? |

Man I got to get this done. Been looking at it for months now! I think I am going to unbolt the hood hinge and have a buddy hold it.

when i took mine off i didnt need to take the hinge off. taking the fender well off made it really easy too.
