2000 5.3 silverado hard starting
Hi, my buddy has 2000 chevy with a 5.3 185k miles on it that takes 4-5 seconds of cranking to get it started and it stumbles a tad then idles normal. He replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter. Starts up fine i guess when its cold but not good when its warm??? A person autozone said the fuel pump still could be bad... Anyone got any suggestions? were stumped haha. Thanks in advance.

Do you wait 2-5 seconds after the key is turned to the on position b4 starting? Fuel pump needs to push fuel to tb.
Maybe dirty fuel rail too Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: 2000 5.3 silverado hard starting
Yeah it starts just as hard whether we prime it or not so im thinking its not the pump. Could we blead the fuel lines pop the rails off and just spray them down good with carb cleaner and blow them out?

Re: 2000 5.3 silverado hard starting
A bad new pump is possible, but check the fuel press regulator first. Its on the drivers side fuel rail. Pull the little hose off of the regulator, it there is any gas its bad.

Okay yeah we'll check that out cause someone previously had suggested that. Thanks!

Re: 2000 5.3 silverado hard starting
one question on the regulator. If its bad and has gas in it, would that be when its running? off? or anytime? Thanks

Re: 2000 5.3 silverado hard starting
ive seen them do this from bad carbon build up in the throttle body... Just pull it off and use carb cleaner to clean the build up off and run like a champ, check engine light even turned off

Re: 2000 5.3 silverado hard starting
lots of good info here. Okay so no gas came out of the hose but symptoms seem about the same as Boog's. Could the reg still be bad if gas doesnt come out?

Re: 2000 5.3 silverado hard starting
Gas coming from the regulator is an indication the diaphram is broken. The spring inside could possibly be broken I suppose. I don't recall it being all that expensive and it is easy to change.
One other thing I want to mention is the vacumn line going to the regulator. Take the top cover off the engine and look that line over real good too. Mine had a crack in the rubber elbow at the regulator causing a loss of vacumn. A new one from GM was $28. A big rip. Next time I'll use a plain piece of vacumn hose for 19 cents. ;) |

Re: 2000 5.3 silverado hard starting
I had this problem on my 2000 5.3 with the same hot and cold start symptoms. Everyone on this sight said fuel regulator, but i ignored it because it was replaced with a dealer fuel regulator a couple years ago when the problem first started, and the vacuum hose didn't have gas leaking out of it. Long story short I finally listened and bought another fuel regulator and it fired right up! 9 out of 10 times its your fuel regulator

Re: 2000 5.3 silverado hard starting
Sounds like its definitely either the hose or regulator. I'll tell him to quit being a cheap ass and go buy them haha. Thanks guys

Re: 2000 5.3 silverado hard starting
Sorry to bring up an old thread but to any who are wondering, it was indeed the fuel pressure regulator. took about 5 minutes to swap and the truck starts up great everytime now. Thanks everyone for the help
