68 C20--->Red Velvet
Ok time to make my own build thread. So the name is probably pretty corny, but when I look at the truck, thats the first thing that popped into my head.
http://www.oodora.com/wp-content/upl...ake-recipe.jpg Have done a few things here and there so I will just play catchup slowly with posts to update things. Story..... Friend of a friend found it in Mound City, Kansas. Story has it old man owned it since it had 700 miles on it. His friend bought it new, but said it got bad gas mileage and sold it to him soon after he got it. Truck hauled a camper most of its life. Had been setting for 6-7 years, but only not running for a year or so. He said he would go out and start in every couple months until pack rat got ahold of the wiring. I bought truck sight unseen. Friend called and guy he knows found this truck and someone should buy it. I got a 20 min rundown description of it, bit bullet and said yes I want it. $1200 delivered to my driveway. Here's how she showed up on 10-26-11 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1319684996.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1319684821.jpg |

Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
i wonder what a good cleaning would do to the paint??? looks like it could be a good patina'd driver

Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
Overall pretty solid for a midwest truck.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1319684602.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1319684432.jpg But..........step 1 is clean it up a little. This is the hood. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1319684713.jpg |
Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
Think of the moss on the hood as a good natural UV protectant.
|
Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
wow :jdp:. the rust is not bad at all
|
Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
So the clean up began. First thing I did was yank the cowl and clean the years of dirt and leaves out. This is my one off shop vac attachment I spent hours making. Ok so I dug through junk in garage for a minute, then grabbed the duct tape.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1320375787.jpg Tool worked great to get stuff out of cab vents. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1320375849.jpg They had been plugged for a while. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1320375802.jpg Here's the cowl after I got it cleaned out. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1320375618.jpg |
Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
Pulled up rubber floor, and mad a sad face. Cab would probably be in way better shape if those vents hadn't been overflowing water to inside of cab for years.
Drivers side is a little worse then passenger side. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1320375697.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1320375590.jpg Im still very happy with overall condition of the cab though. Way better shape then my 76 that I sold to get this truck. Pile of rotted away GM iron...... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1320375738.jpg |
Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet

Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
im jealous of the factory a/c. thats something to be thankful for.
|
Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
^^^^^hes right! i had to buy a 67 A/C cab to get A/C
|
Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
Finally time came to give the truck a bath. I got out the sprinkler to let her soak and soften up the mossy stuff.

Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
how did it get that bad to begin with?and is that the only spot?
|
Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
come on lets see what it looks like with all the moss off of it !
|
Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
Nicely optioned truck and it looks like most of it is still there. It will be interesting to see how it cleans up. Good luck.
|
Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
Does the engine run or have you tried yet? I can't remember if you said?
|
Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
I have not tried to get it to run. Motor spins over freely. Come spring once I have collected lots of parts I will get it running. Needs gas tank,brake work, and wheels and tires. I want to put better carb on and an HEI too. Some of it I have, pics to come later. Just trying to drag this thread out.
OK.......back to the fun. Let the sprinkler soak for a couple hours. I don't know how the truck got so covered. It had a camper in back so it was all just mainly on the hood and fenders. Here's hood afterward http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1320264756.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1320264768.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1320264634.jpg |
