I'm new and bought my first truck
5 Attachment(s)
I already posted on here.. i know, taboo... anyhow. I'm north of the border, this is my first truck..I've always loved these things (amongst other toys). It's not a show truck, so this isn't going to be a garage queen.
Can anyone help me figure out what engine and transmission are in here? PO said it was a '74 Camaro engine, but the quick searchs i did seem to put it as a '72, '73 or '78... and varying from 160-200hp (code is V0124CKD). The transmission he also said was a 'rock crusher' manual 4 speed. Here are some pictures enjoy or comment on. I'm excited! a new project! |

Re: I'm new and bought my first truck
Welcome. Looks like a nice truck but the trans doesn't look anything like an M22 rock crusher.
This is what a typical rock crusher looks like. http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...iNG4kRi0J-x99E Kim |
Re: I'm new and bought my first truck
yup, that's not an M22. Or an M21, or an M20... Sorry. As a matter of fact, I have no idea WHAT that trans is! Cool old piece of gear though! And nice truck, welcome.
Oh yeah - if you print in text the engine casting number, someone can help you ID it, I can't read it in the pic. |
Re: I'm new and bought my first truck
SM420 with super low first gear (usually start in second when unloaded). I have only heard the term "rock crusher" applied to auto Muncie M22 because of the gear whine. I grew up calling the truck 4 speed "stump pullers" because the first gear combined with a 4.11 or 4.56 gears would do that. Almost indestructible transmission. Later model trucks have the SM465. Here is a link that has pictures of them together, look closely at the top housing and you will see a difference.

Re: I'm new and bought my first truck
OrrieG, I think you're spot on with tranny identification. He did call the first gear a 'stump gear' and I was instructed to use 2nd... One of the things I'm doing in the spring is get the 3.38 gears from Patrick's.
The engine I'd is V0124CKD. I couldn't see any other numbers. |
Re: I'm new and bought my first truck
Welcome!!!!
Get the casting numbers off of the back of the block just above where the tranny mounts on the driver's side, that'll tell what the basic engine is. My buddy had one of those trannies, he used to joke that he had to drive stakes in the ground near what he was pulling to tell if he was moving or not :D But what a deal for torque multiplication, almost any engine can break something loose with that kind of ratio. What's it like, buying a truck that looks nice? I can't drive any of mine when I buy 'em, most don't have anything under the hood or ANY paint! |
Re: I'm new and bought my first truck
stump-puller, rock-crusher ... potAto, potOto :)
Either way, you bught a nice truck! Congrats! |
