Trans and TC reinstall
 

Thought I would ask those who have done this before. I had to remove the trans due to 3rd gear syncro being shot. I am ready for the re-install and thought it would be easiest to reinstall the trans with the adapter on it and after getting the cross member mounter add the TC. Seems like to much weight if I try to get the trans lined up with the throw out bearing and clutch assembly with the TC on. Does this logic make sense? Doesnt look like to much trouble getting to the adapter/TC bolts once the adaprt is on the cross member. Any thoughts?

That plan sounds reasonable to me if you are doing it from underneath. That way you can put the trans on the jack, mount it all up, then put the transfer case on the jack and get it mounted up. otherwise like you said its a lot of weight and it is off balance from side to side due to the transfer case.

When we did a transmission and transfer case swap on my Dad's 69 we unbolted the bed and cab and slid them back on the frame. Then hoisted one whole assembly out and the other in. it went pretty quickly that way.

yes, it was so much easier when the cab was off, just drop them in. Thank you for the reply!

Would it be easier to use an engine hoist with the boom in the cab and lift everyting thru the removable center floor piece? I'm thinking about doing that when I convert my 83 to a manual trans.

I've done the install both ways and I think using an engine hoist with the boom through the cab made it a bit easier.

Anyone drill out the rivets in the crossmember braces so that you can bolt the two upper pieces in, then raise the tcase and tranny bolted to the main piece straight up? I think it would be alot easier since you have to angle the crossmember in since the upper pieces need to go in the channel.

Got the trans installed and as always learned a few tricks. The first is to strap the trans to the trans jack. I used a rachet strap. Once it got close I laid on my back held the frame rails and used the balls of my feet to get to sink in. Then I tried to reinstall the clutch fork. Found out that you can't install it once the trans is in so out and back in it went. Doing it solo was tough and I am glad that's over. Now all I have to do is figure out why I can't get the shift back in. The trans was completely rebuild by a local shop.
