Tachometer 123?
 

I'm going to have to pull my instrument cluster out soon and see if I can fix the irratic speedometer, as it doesn't seem to be just the cable.

I'm thinking / wishing that it sure would be fun to install a
tachometer in the 64 gauge cluster while it's out.

Then I could see how many rpm's it's taking to get my 4.11
differential up to 55 mph on the road. Sure, I've used the
calculators online, but seeing would be more fun.
I even wire up my tach / dwell meter thru the dash
to see, until I realized it only went up to 1500 rpms.... oops.

I've looked over all the forums on tachometers for our trucks,
but haven't really seen any thing definite saying that if you
buy brand X, Model 123, etc., that it will fit.

I'm not looking for factory original 50 year old tach that
may or may not work, and I might have to spend another
$200 bucks on.

I know one of the Chevy parts places sells a tach kit
for about $200.
Are there other cheaper options. I'd be a little leary
of those $25 Chinese tachs.

So, what Brand / Model tachometer will fit with minimal alteration,
look decent, and at what price range would get me something reliable?

You could use an early 60's pontiac big car tach.

Man I quit using mcafee and norton, they are ridiculous, my internet provider has them built into their system all those others just made my computer run really slow. I now use CCcleaner every day and have had no issues. Here is a link to exactly what you asked for, it is a cheap jcwhitney tack and it shows how to install it. Kieth

The JC Whitney tach mentioned in the article doesn't appear to be available anymore, but there are a couple others that might work.
Seems like the problem is to find one with a 90 degree needle sweep so it's visible. Most tachs look to be about 270 sweep, and would be partially hiden from the cluster face plate.

Did find another acticle showing a tach install using the
Early Classic tach kit.

Classicparts.com sales reproduction tachs. that fit in the factory opening, I think for $169

Go on e-bay and search for an old mercruiser tach. They look the same to me - 5k rpms, one wire hook up to the coil, and can often be had fairly cheap. I have one in my truck, although it is mounted in a piece of PVC pile and clamped to the steering column.

I'm assuming that a Mercruiser is not an 8 cylinder engine.
My Chevy is........ will a tach for a 4 cylinder, etc., work on
a V-8?

Have you used this particular tach? If it comes out of the can
okay, it might be mountable in the dash.

Mine worked on my six as is. I beleive that you pop the cap off the back, and you can adjust it, or select 4, 6, or 8 cylinder, like many tachs.

Mercruiser is the boat engine/drive. They used 4, 6, and 8 cylinder chevy and ford engines throughout the years.

This is the one that is on Persh's page. I put one in a dash- but have not hooked it up yet.
