qudrajet help
I just swaped a used correct qjet onto my 402 (had a edelbrock that I couldn't get to run right) Can someone tell me if I need to hook anything else up? How exactly does the choke work on these? I'm pretty much a newb when it come to carbs.
What is the cylinder hanging off the right front of the carb? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...k/DSC01919.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...k/DSC01920.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...k/DSC01922.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...k/DSC01923.jpg |
Re: qudrajet help
The cylinder thingy is your fast idle solinoid.

Re: qudrajet help
You'll need a divorced choke set up. Do you have the provisions for this on your intake?
|
Re: qudrajet help
that is a solenoid that makes the truck idle faster when the AC is turned on.
As for the choke, it should go on the passenger side of the carb. the earlier chokes relied on heat from the intake manifold to open the choke as the engine warmed up. What type of intake do you have? I do not see any provisions for a thermal choke on your intake. you can add one to the side of your carb, but that depends on the age of your carb. You may have to run a cable into the cab for a manual choke. |
Re: qudrajet help
Show a pic of the side where the choke is so we can see if it's electric, manual or divorced choke asm.
On this site there's a pic of the combination emmission control valve. http://carburetor-manual.com/rochest...alve-a-42.html |

Added a pic of the intake. There are no provisions for a hot air choke. Should there be? |
Re: qudrajet help
You have the correct intake. Take a look at the pic below. All you need is to get the divorced choke bimetal spring assembly, shround and linkage arm.

Re: qudrajet help
+1 on what INDYUKE said on the choke.
The cylinder IS a solenoid that increases the idle a couple of hundred rpms when the AC compressor is turned on so that it doesn't stall the truck by pulling the idle too low. It is adjustable. You still set your idle speed by the screw on the right side of the carb linkage (as you are looking at the front of the carb). The solenoid won't do anything unless you have it hooked up to your AC. |

Re: qudrajet help
Yes. I bet it is filled with junk. One hole is tapped the other is just for a locating nub on the bottom of the choke spring assembly.
Looks like you have factory cruise? |

Thanks for the help. I can see the other hole in the pic. The lighting not the best in my garage. The camera flash really helped. |
Re: qudrajet help
Here's a link that should determine whether the carb is or isn't what it was represented to be.
http://www.ehow.com/how_6130381_deco...r-numbers.html I see that the secondary lock-out is missing from your carb,, some rebuilders don't put them back on after kitting the carb. The solenoid was usually used to kick the idle when the A/C was running but I have also seen them used as an "anti-diesel",(run on when the key is turned off ) device. It appears that your intake has the flat mounting pad for a choke furnace and that carb is designed to be operated by a choke furnace. This link shows a choke furnace, stove, coil, or whatever you want to call it. They are supposed to have a metal cover over them. http://stores.channeladvisor.com/AAA...temid=12756400 Someone on here probably has a picture of the complete assembly connected to the carb. EDIT: I'm Too late,, you guys are faster !!! LOL !!! |
Re: qudrajet help
Doug, looks like you got your answers with the addition of your last photo.
If if you still would like some pictures of my carb let me know. s/t Posted via Mobile Device |

Here is a pic of the choke side of my 402 with divorced choke. By the way, your truck will almost NEVER start if the choke isn't attached/adjusted.

Re: qudrajet help
Ok. finially had time to go through the qjet. It looked like the float was swelled/sticking so I replaced the float, needle and seat, acc pump, gaskets, etc.
Since I was missing the choke stove I ordered the kit from edelbrock sells for big blocks. Was this a mistake? It seems to be backwards from the pic DANTIP posted and I can't install it the other way unless I do some grinding on the base of the choke stove or the mounting pad of the intake. The trucks getting closer and closer to getting parted each and every day it doesn't run. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...k/DSC02260.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...k/DSC02261.jpg |
Re: qudrajet help
The coil unwinds as it warms up so you could use a hair dryer or a heat gun if you have one to test it.
btw: I did a quick search on quadrajet divorced chokes and came up with two or three different ones. I'm not sure why they would all be different?? |
Re: qudrajet help
m6z has it on right. I shouldn't matter which system you use so long as you don't mix and match from different stove systems. The system on my truck looks very different from what you guys have, but it's all dependent on what type of intake you have.
Don't forget to put on the stove cover or else it will run too cold and never open all the way up. You'll probably have to fine tune the whole system by slightly bending the connecting arm to get the best open and closure rate out of it. |
Re: qudrajet help
did some more reading. Problem solved. Truck finially runs. The acc. pump check ball was stuck. Replaced the ball and reassembled.
I've still got to get the choke hooked up, but it's running and that's all that matters. |
