Custom Cab Sail Panel bracket info. for you
 

I have had numerous inquiries about the size, design, and location of the Custom Cab Sail Panel brackets. I have put this together which shows the answers to the questions asked. A picture is worth a thousand words, so here are some pics.

The bracket is 6 3/8 inches long, 1/2 wide, and is creased in the middle to give it an offset. This offset is needed because the back of the cab starts to round where these are mounted, this offset keeps or pushes the bracket tight against the back of the cab.

I have several Custom Cabs with these on them, and the exact location varies by around 1/4 of an inch so I doubt GM used a template when attaching these they probally just "eyeballed it". None the less This should allow you to mount these on your cab.

Check other posts Clyde65 is trying to fabricate these from one I sent him as a pattern.

I love it when they show measurements to 2 decimal points, who has a decimal measuring tape? lol

Thanks, and let us know when he gets the fab done, i'd let to get a set of them. The PO of my truck used a small dab of JB Weld on mine.

Thanks for the info! I didn't even know it needed that . I put mine on recently and noticed the slight gap but had no idea I was missing that. This is my first c-10

I just did this recently. I used some scrap steel from my donar cab. Made some strips 7" x 1" and drilled two holes. I undercoated both sides, and took measurements off the sail panels for install. I also used 2 stainless steel screws per side. I didn't take any pics, but they were just flat steel pieces the thickness of the cab. No issue as you can adjust them as tight as you want them to hold.

So, are they there just for a spacer, or do they have something to do with holding the sails on?

They keep the top outer edge of the sail panel from flopping around and hold them tight to the cab. They just fit on over the back edge of the sail panel.

What I did was after I marked location and drilled/mounted was lossen them up just enough I could slide the top edge of the sail panel underneath. then add the 3 screws that mount the sail to the cab and the 4th screw on the outside of the cab.

if you look at pic 4 on post 1....there is a slight bump in the retainer. Its so the retainer lays flat against the cab and the sail panel goes underneath the "bump". That's why I just used some old flat cab sheet metal and it worked just fine.

The original clips are formed in such a way so as to allow the rear lip on the sail panel to slide underneath, between the clip and the cab. There are other ways to accomplish the same function.

For those like me who hate drilling holes in thier early sheetmetal, double stack a couple layers or 1 inch squares of 3M vhb (very high bond) double sided adhesive foam tape in the upper corners of the sails roughly one inch in and one inch down from the top of the sail. Fit the forward edge in the door jamb and insert the middle screw. Roll the sail panel to the back of the cab to get the tape stuck. Inset the other two screws in the door jamb side and whalla! No holes or brackets in the cab outer panel. You could also use the .035 thick vhb tape to stick the jamb sides on , but will be lect with the sail panel screw holes unless you know an aluminum welder and then repolish the areas.

how about using some thin trim tape to stick the homemade flat brackets on with? that way the sail itself wouldn't be stuck. you can get it in .045" thickness, or even .030". the tape thickness would serve to set the bracket off the body so the sail could fit behind similar to the way the original bent worked. maybe

If you pull the panel with mild continous pressure it will release.
The above mentioned tape and bracket method would work well also.....i didnt have brackets :(

so glad i read this post, i was about to drill the cab for the brackets, but read this and went with the tape . it was so much easier than trying to measure also.
