Deep cycle group 31s are best... It all depends on gear, voltage, battery cca's, series/parallel, etc.

Costco used to carry deep cycle but it has been a while since I got a couple.

correct group 31 marine batteries work the best (unless you want to spend big money on kinekt batteries). If you cant swing new look for battery warehouse or a place that sells refurb batteries. new you are looking about $110 a piece refurb bout $60. How many pumps and how much play time is he looking for? He shouldnt be trying to hop or anything on a truck like this so 4 batts should be fine or even 6 (3 per pump assuming he has 2 pumps) Higher the cca's the "faster" it will be but around 900ish should be fine for non hoppers. any questions feel free to ask i come from a lowrider backround. Does he have them hooked in series or parrellel? series will be "faster" again parrellel will give more play time but it depends on the gears in the pumps as well. You can always call your local battery dealer (interstate or whoever) and ask for refurbed group 31's, pretty easy to find its what motorhomes and stuff use as well.

drop: with a 2 pump system, how many solenoids do you recommend for quick action, not hopping, but quick? Also, on average, what can I get out of a 2 pumps (4 batteries) pin switch set-up?

I may put 6 batteries in.

3 sol. per pump so you need 6 total, stay away from sol. blocks they dont work plain and simple. 4 batt. will work but will need to charge them more often, i would recomend 6 and it just so happens that 6 fit across the bed nicely but 6 does weigh more. Do you know at all what kind of gears are in the pumps? a number 8 or 9 marz gear would be ideal with only running this amount of batts, anything like an 11 or 13 will barely move. i dont really understand what you are asking about what you can get out of a pin switch, are you asking how many switches you can wire out of 2 pumps? just remember run your switch power off the SECOND battery. hydraulic switches are 24v switches.
