66 cig lighter question
1 Attachment(s)
So, bought a new lighter assy for my truck (mostly so I could temp plug a gps in and calibrate my speedometer, but that's not important...)
It came with TWO wires coming from the assy (vice one on my old one, which could explain why it wasn't working!) The one that connected to the center was of course the hot wire which I plugged into the fuse block where the old lighter wiring connected. But there was a ground plug on the casing and a wire coming from a hump on the casing that wasn't there before.... Hmmm... So, I grounded it to the casing. It all works fine no sparks, lighter pops out when heated, etc etc. Seems a bit odd because the two wires were the same length and tied together - when IF I wired it correctly, one wire only needed to be about 3-4 inches.... Oh well, it's working and hasn't caught fire. Yet. I did hook it backwards accidentally first - and just for your own awareness, when hooked up backwards, the heater resistor element will GLOW BRIGHT WHITE! Ha! So, after I pulled my cranium outta my arse, I reversed em all and seems to be good. Oh yeah - HERE's my question - these 3 clips came with the new lighter, have no idea what they go to - anyone?? (and if you see any stupidity in what you read above, feel free to splain it to me) Thanks! |
Re: 66 cig lighter question
I think some of the newer lighter assemblies have a light that illuminates when the element is removed to aid getting it back in place in the dark.

Re: 66 cig lighter question
Hmm.. Interesting. It only lit up when it was hooked up backwards(!) It didn't heat up the lighter either when it was connected that way. Reverse the wires, and presto, changeo, it worked (but with no light). Ya got me thinkin, I'm gonna go check it again, in the dark now. Wish me luck.

almost one year later, any idea what these clips are for?;)

Re: 66 cig lighter question
the clips hold the wires in place. they mount behind a lip in the dash. one wire is for the element and the other is for the light. its a self grounding unit throufh the dash. i can supply a wire and clip diagram tomorrow when i get to a scanner.

Re: 66 cig lighter question
I had the same question ( clips ) but I never used them. I put a second lighter where the choke cable was to go. I have electric choke so no need for the cable! Both lighters work, most newer autos come with more than one 12v outlet so now she has 2 as well.
